Not cheap but maybe for good reason. Im sure they did not want to cannibalize 3 series sales and factored that in while pricing this car. Or maybe it was done too for those who dont know BMW very well and liked this car. They might look at it then look at a 3 and realize it's only marginally more and upgrade...?

I guess it's for the people who doesn't like the look of the 3-series coupe, this will be their smaller alternative? Because that's the only comparison where you can see a significant difference in price.
I'll reserve judgment until I get to drive one.
Let's just say, in theory, that the 135i is nearly if not as luxurious to drive as the 335i in every aspect (standard features, ride, interior quality, noise, etc) except of course interior volume.
Yet it weighs less and costs less. So what if it's only a couple hundred pounds and $5k... if I could save the weight, gain the performance, save the money, and not give up anything except interior volume... then I'd be all for it.
With that said maybe the 1 really will be a significantly cheapened version of the 3 with lots of compromises for only a small savings and small gain in performance. In that case then yeah I'd just stick with the 3...

You really have to be a fan to buy one at MSRP. Now I think I have to take my thread back.
Seriously, these prices are loony. They are literally the same price points as an IS250/IS350. The 3 series has inflated in price SO MUCH that BMW is able to price its lower model the same price as its competitions' cars. That fact speaks wonders about how much BMW owners are getting shafted nowadays.
