I vaguely remember reading that the black paint on the SC430 is single stage (no clearcoat). Somebody said black looks best in single stage paint. Is this true?
Lexus paint is very shiny but I just wish it was as durable as MB. From what I've seen on a 2001 S500, the paint is bulletproof! 80k miles and there are no rock chips on the front bumper.
I had my black IS250 for 2 weeks now and I have 3 rock chips...
clear bra is your friend
back in 01 or before, i believe some of the black onyx they are single stage, but after that i think all black paint on lexus have clear coat
BMW is waterborne paint too. MB is either waterborne or ceramic. All waterborne paint chips easily, it's a bummer but it happens. In general Lexus paint is "harder" than average.
I've had the complete opposite experience. My Lexus paint chips much easier than my BMW paint. Now, its hard to compare exactly due to the difference in years. My BMW is a 2002, while my Lexus was a 2004.

Lexus used single stage paint as recently as the 1IS, so it is possible that black SC's are still single stage. Single stage black isn't inherently better than two stage for looks, but it's easier to lay down uniformly, so it tends to have less orange peel and look more "black". The downside is it is harder to maintain.
They're identical. I'd give a $50 to anyone that could find the difference. I will give it to Lexus, when they want uniformity, they get it.
They know and they don't care. Nissan/Infiniti paint is among the worst in the industry on almost all accounts. They claim it is due to environmental restrictions, but that is a copout; Toyota/Lexus and Honda/Acura both manage to have superior paint, as do every German and almost every US manufacturer. Black Infiniti paint in particular is notorious amongst detailers.
You can send me 50 bucks.
Where are you getting your information? There are a lot of flaws in it.
People, lets keep in mind there are really only 3 or 4 big paint makers in the world. PPG and DuPont supply almost every car maker.
Oh yeah,
please tell me more about how MB paint is waterborne or ceramic, this will be interesting.

MB has this new nano-technology thing in their paints (the newer models) that resist chipping and scratches. It also makes their cars really shiny, at least that's what I've noticed in the new crop of MB models (basically those after 2005 even if it's an older model like a C-Class).

Where do I get my information? I do this for a living, I have been for 12 years. While the supplier does matter, the method of application has far more to do than the supplier.
Seeing if I knew? That's clever. All I can say is if you have more experience working with automotive paint than I do, hats off to you.
There may be only a few paint suppliers, but the car companies themselves provides the spec. If Nissan provides a crappy spec, dupont/ppg/etc will provide crappy paint. Picus is right, Nissan's way of implementing the paint is why the paint doesn't look as great compared to Lexus/Toyota or Honda/Acura. There is no flaw in his information at all. Nissan's excuse is poor at best.
I really hate detailing black infiniti's. They look okay after you're done but man the shine fades so quickly.
Yes, I detail now. I used to work in a spray booth. I'm not saying I know everything about paint, but I know enough to know I am not talking out my ***.
My IS is really shiny... crazy shine. But they must not have done a good job inspecting my car when it was shipped out because i found a flaw in the silver paint under the clearcoat.
I know the older SC400/SC300 didn't have a clearcoat on black but I thought they changed that with the SC430.
