I remember most of these - the Radar Sentry had such a limited range it was said to tell you to get out your wallet, you already had the ticket. Most of the others did actually detect primitive x-band radar, but you got a ton of false alarms and range was still limited.

Generally radar detectors were useless until the arrival of the Escort on the scene. Now, with lidar, they're once again useless. When the laser beam tags you, reach for your wallet. I shelved my V1 five years ago and began using my head to avoid speeding tickets, thusly:
  • If you are determined to push it more than 10 mph over the limit, you are asking for it. Ten over the limit is about the threshold for tickets in most jurisdictions.

  • Don't lead the pack, don't drive in the fast lane, or weave in and out of traffic. Let another fool who is willing to drive 2 - 3 mph faster than you take the lead and let him slowly pull away. When he gets more than 15 - 20 seconds ahead, find another patsy to fall in line ahead of you. With 2-3 cars running faster than you up ahead, they will tie up the speed trap and unwittingly protect you. Watch their actions - sudden braking or ducking in behind a slower car.

  • Speed is only going to save you time out on the open road - you can't make time in traffic; it's dangerous, you will be exceedingly obvious, and it will earn you a citation. Drive swiftly but smoothly. You can be flying while appearing to be a law-abiding citizen: don't overtake at warp speed, no quick lane changes, no jerky maneuvers - just flow . . .

  • Be aware of obvious traps: dips in the road, signs, bushes, or buildings near the roadway that could make good cover for a cop. Let those poor fools shaking the trees ahead of you smoke 'em out.

  • Maintain situational awareness. Keep your scan going while checking your mirrors, instruments, and the road ahead. Know where every car in view is in relationship to you, and if that situation is changing. You don't want any surprises - you snooze, you lose.

  • Choose your battlefield carefully. Interstates are usually patrolled fairly heavily, while less crowded federal and state highways are seldom patrolled except near small towns.

  • Finally, in the event of capture, treat all officers of the law with courtesy and respect - even if you would like to punch the guy's lights out. It's their game and they hold all the cards. Creating a big scene may land you in the county lockup for the weekend. Hope you remembered to renew that AAA card with the bail guarantee.

The best part of your body to avoid tickets with, Lil, is not your head but your right foot......just not pressing it down as much.

The best radar detector museums out there are the State Police stations in VA. Go through one and you will probably see a bunch of impounded detectors...they are illegal everywhere in the state.
