Both methods work for me.

During hard breaking (i.e. where your body is being forced forward) it just doesn't feel right to have to pull the lever back to downshift. It feels so much more natural that your body is moving forward so you should push the lever forward to downshift. And when your getting pushed back in your seat, you pull the lever back as well to upshift. Just my 2c.

Yeah but if you think about it, if your hands are at 9-3 when turning, the paddles will be in the same place anyway.

i completely agree... i think that bmw's "steptronic" system is the best available, it is the closest to a manual speed wise that ive driven. My grandfathers mercedes is the same way as chrysler: left to down shift, right to upshift.

who the hell would be stupid enough to give the go ahead on that?

his benz is a 2000 e320: this is what the shifter looks like

heres my opinion on the up shift down shift (push forward and push back):
i think it makes the most sense to put the up shift when you pull back and the down shift when you push forward, the way i see it is not really as speeding up or slowing down, i see it as a way you are controlling the engine revs. if you pull back (downshift) then they fall and vise versa

as for the pattle shifters, i think its best if they're stationary. i speak from experience in saying its hard to find the upshift when you're turning at redline.. but then again it does say in the bmw manual (smg m3) that if you're in that situation, you should just reach down to upshift.

i know lamborghinis and ferraris have it in this set up where the pattles are on the steering column and not the wheel
