Camaro may lose its buzz by 2009

Last week's unveiling of the Chevrolet Camaro convertible concept
won oohs and aahs that rivaled those for the Camaro coupe concept shown at last year's auto show.

But at least a few analysts and prospective buyers question whether General Motors Corp. can keep the excitement going until the sports car reaches showrooms in 2009.

"The positive buzz in 2009 certainly won't be as intense as when the coupe first rolled out last year," said auto analyst Kevin Tynan of Argus Research in New York. "You even saw it last week. The convertible generated some excitement, but it didn't generate as much buzz as the coupe did last year. ... The response was: 'OK. Just build it already.' "

But GM says it's bringing the car to market on a time line that compares with the time it took to bring the Pontiac Solstice to market from its unveiling as a concept car.

"We've got all kinds of things planned to keep the buzz going," said Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper. "One of them is, it will be the star of the 'Transformers' movie this summer."

Auto analyst Erich Merkle said he believes the Camaro will still be hot in two years.

GM's only mistake with the Camaro was killing it in the first place, he said. "I don't think they'll have any problem generating excitement. God, I love that car."

And by the time this hits the show rooms the Mustang/Challenger/Charger will all have something similar in them if not better.

Chevy needs to hurry up!

This unfortunately is nothing new to GM. Once the concept car is out you gotta wait so long for it to see light of day. Then people forget about the car, and someone else comes out with something that probably looks or performs better. SSR, HHR, Solstice are examples. Though the Solstice concept was out for 2-3 years before put into production, it sold very well for a couple months.

IMO the Camaro should be out on the streets by this summer!! It has a feature role in an upcoming movie, plus it was introduced an entire year ago. When people go see that movie, many probably will want to run to the dealer to buy it, to find out that they have to wait another 2 years.

Anticipation leads to expections, and unless GM can provide the goods, unfulfilled expectations lead to disappointment.

So far, GM has been unable to meet the expectations of their customers by taking so darn long in giving them what they want. Demand weens even before supply is provided, and GM will never take full advantage of market desirability...

I already started saving for this car, I'm up to about $10 now. I have a couple of years to come up with the rest so I'm in no hurry.
Seriously though, I do plan on gettting on when they do come out. If they look anything like that concept convertible then I will hopefully be on a waiting list. I'm in love with this car, I've always been a Chevy guy. Vettes are to expensive and they say this car will be priced around the same as the Mustang which I could buy now but my money is locked in CDs so Its saving itself. I can't wait!
GM, put me down for an orange convertible 6-spd V8. I'll pick it up in 2010,lol

The Mustang has been the only one that was reasonable by my eyes.
Of course, Ford had theirs so GM has to respond...a bit late IMO. So come '09

Are you kidding me? Marketing geniuses at GM are idiots if they think that is enough to continue the buzz and build anticipation for the Camero.

Last I heard, 10 year olds can't afford to buy cars. Are they planning on selling remote control cars until then? By the time 2009 rolls around, the new Mustang will out and then they'll have even more competition.

Hell, there will be many many revisions of other autos out by then. I thought 2009 was kind of ridiculous.... though Nissan seems to be acting just like GM by taking a billion years to release the GTR.
