Why don't most car manufactures just add more torque too their engines and have less horsepower, not really less. Take Bentley for example the Arnage 500 hp and 1000 Nm. True the car weighs a ton.
Why not have like a 200 hp with like a nice amount of torque?
Horsepower is related to torque, and torque is turning force. Place a lever on the engine's crankshaft and measure the twisting force produced, and you have torque. Note that time is not a factor - torque can be constant over time. Horsepower, on the other hand, is the rate at which the torque is produced.
You can't have tons of one and not enough of the other. Take the Jetta TDI for example. It has tons of torque for a compact car but ~100hp. As a result, it takes 13.1 seconds to get to 60.
