From what I understand after living in VA for a year, anything over 80mph is considered reckless driving. They are VERY strict, and I know officers will nab you at 81 mph because reckless driving is a big bust for them
I have quite a few friends been nabbed for doing 81/82 in a 65 zone on I-81 in Montgomery/Pulaski Counties.
The best advice I can give you is to plead not guilty and then try to negotiate the ticket down. Here in NY we have a law , failure to follow a traffic device, and when I get a speeding ticket, I plead guilty to that. It's not the money but your license and insurance that matter. Most of the time you can plead to a lesser charge.
I hear Virginia is really strict on all of their speeding tickets and laws.... You can't even run a radar detector there can you? I know in FL 25 over the limit would be about $200ish.
Well, yes and no. In VA the philosophy is simply that when you sign for your drivers' license, you agree to obey traffic laws and not make excuses for it.
And, you are correct....VA does not allow the use radar detectors. State Troopers ( and some local police ) have " detector-detector " systems that let them know when you are using one. Get caught with one and it gets impounded. Under some conditions they can even search your car for one...though this is not often done. It will NOT be impounded, though, if you just have a detector in the car, the car is registered out-of-state, and you are not actually using the detector.
GEICO, also, will not insure people either in or out of VA who use detectors...that policy ( no pun intended ) applies nationwide. They have a point system for detector use just like VA.
( Sorry......I know part of this was off-topic, but I wanted to explain VA's postion for Payam)
looked on the website and found out that anything 25 mph and over your not eligible to take defensive driving and also it said for 25 over the standard speed is $293!!!!
