Default Feelings About General Motors

What would you fellas have to say should GM go belly up, declare bankruptcy, or face some other terrible company-altering crisis?

I guess if there were cars/platforms that were worth anything such as Corvette and Trucks and Cadillacs etc. Someone would pick them up and run.

Just like BMW bought ROVER and Mini and Range Rover as one big block that wasn't worth much together. The gave away Rover cars, sold Range Rover and kept Mini.

I could see someone or some car company keeping the good bits and ash-canning Saturn, Pontiac, Buick, Hummer etc..

I wouldn't feel sad b/c the workers who will be hurt are the same ones who are (partly or mostly) responsible.

I would be sorry to see Corvette go, but I don't think a valuable asset like that would be lost.

I would till I was completely dehydrated.

As much as I dislike their products... GM shutting down would mean the American economy shutting down.

Agreed. As much as I hate to say it American cars need to stick in the game if America is to thrive economically.

Pontiac and Hummer may be dropped in an extreme case scenario, but I don't think Saturn and Buick are going anywhere....they each have too loyal a customer base, in spite of the fact that Saturn is fast becoming just another GM division and some of the elderly Buick customers are dying off.

By the way, welcome to CL, tama z71. You've joined the right organization and the right forum ( CAR CHAT ) if you want to learn or talk about cars.

My feelings on GM. I think they make some of the dumbest decisions in the car game and are suffering for them. WHy discontinue the Camaro and Firebird? Those cars have loyal followers and were affordable cars with brute force. As poorly made as they were you saw a million of them on the road. I had 2 of them. They bring the Aussie GTO over here and charge 34K but don't give it power seats and tilt steering wheel. And it's sorta plain compaired to the F-bodies...although I like it. They make a bunch of cars that look like grandma haulers and think that's going to carry them. They have the resources to build the most reliable cars with quality interiors and they give us plastic and repair shops. I don't wish anyone bad but I miss my 1973 Monte Carlo. GM has been going downhill every since then.

I actually know a lot more about the hard times going at Ford than GM. I would be sorry to see it die.

Too often when they come out with designs I just picture then hitting the rental car lots rather than a home garage. The designs are plain bland and I cannot point to anything particular on a GM car that makes me say wow. Every so often, I go with friends who want me to come along when they go to buy a car. This applies to the most part to Chevrolet dealerships (in Mexico you often find cars under the GM framework sold out of the Chevrolet dealers) and the poor sales rep comes out with this act, "don't you just love it, etc." I feel sad when I see this. Then my friends end up going to buy one of the Japanese nameplates and the rest is history.

GM styling of their cars is one problem, reliability is another, besides the corvette, I can't think of any (GM)car that attracts my attention, or make me take a double look, and say wow! My 5yr old IS300 still gets a lot of compliments on how nice it looks, as well as my new GS! People have actually stopped me to ask what kind of car it is GM, and Ford may soon become minor players in the automotive segment.........

On the contrary, it would be a sign of tremendous progress. Companies like GM represent the pinnacle of American success in the industrial age. That time has passed, and countries that will continue to grow in the world scene will do so in information technologies. Were GM able to transform itself into a lean model of manufacturing efficiency that would be wonderful, but since they have proven unable to do that then it is best that they go extinct like an unchanging dinosaur, making room in the marketplace for other, better competitors (even if they are not U.S. companies).

GM has gotten better though. Can't see them going under. Products from Caddy, Pontiac, and Chevy, are competing against there Euro and Japannese counterparts. I love the performance cars coming from Caddy, Pontiac, and Chevy. Pontiac and Caddy are involved in Racing more than than ever. Hey, there is a Pontiac GTO driven by Rys Millen in Formula D
