Default Honda building a V-8?

"Honda is rumored to be testing a new aluminum-block V-8 n the Ridgeline pickup truck. The v-8 is in the 4.2-4.4 liter range with vtech and cylinder shutoff, and is slated to appear first the next Acura RL, a 2011 model launching in 2010. Honda also is adding the engine to the next generation Ridgeline slated for 2011 as a 2012 model. The exact configuration is unknown, but given the displacement, it's not based on the 60-degree 3.5-3.8-liter V-6s, so it's probably a 90-degree configuration, typical of eigh cylinder engines. Honda engineers take up the V-8 project as tehy complete work on a V-6 turbodiesel. It isn't designed just for the european market, which has embraced Honda's 2.2-liter disel four, but also would provide needed low-end torque for the ridgeline and pilot suv. Low sulfur fuel required in the U.S. from 2007 will make the engine viable and will launch about the same time as a Mercedes-Benz diesel assault on our market. Honda also is reportedly working on a hybrid-powered ridgeline for teh 2009 model year." - Motor Trend

So if it comes the first V-8 in sedans will be shared with a truck V-8 I wonder can they pull that off, I don't think anyone in the industry does that with a V-8.

We''ll see, its still a good 5 years away.

The Tundra has a totally different engine. The 2UZ FE is in the Tundra, Pathfinder, GX470, LX470 and Sequoia. The 1UZ is in the SC, GS and LS400. The 3UZ FE is in the GS, SC and LS430. Although the 1 and 2UZ do share some similarities, they are different.

I mentioned Honda was testing the V8 in the Ridgeline and that it probably could find its way in the RL a few weeks ago in some of the other topics. Sharing the base engine design between trucks and cars is no bid deal. The cams, will be different, tuning will be different. Its the same as how the MDX engine responds totally different from the RL engine even if they are both J spec 3.5L engines. If it works it works.

What's wrong with that? For pickups in particular you need a V8 to tow anything beyond a jet ski.

sorry to be ****, but... it's VTEC... VTech is a phone.

I'm not surprised that they're considering V8s. Considering their popularity in high-dollar markets (namely the U.S.) it was only a matter of time before Honda joined the crowd. I wouldn't be surprised if they only had one engine family for the V8 and used it in several different platforms. I doubt they'll be identical between platforms, but they'll still most likely be derived from the same family. It's basically the same thing GM does with their small blocks and Honda did with the Accord/S2000 motors and all K-series motors.

When Honda does come out with a V8, it will make all other stock V8s of similar displacement look shameful. Lets hope they put it in a vehicle that is not heavier than the competition.

The "Hemi" 5.7 liter is found in both Dodge's trucks and the Chrysler/Dodge 300c/Charger.

Mercedes-Benz uses the same V8 that they use in the E500, CLK500, S500, CLS500, CL500 and SL500 in both there ML500 and G500 trucks.

I believe BMW also uses the same 4.4 liter V8 that they use in the 545, 745 and 645 in the X5.
