The Honda Civic has earned a reputation for reliability and safety over the years, but the 2011 version of the compact sedan isn’t quite measuring up to expectation.
Thanks to new testing standards, the 2011 version of the Civic sedan received just two stars in the Nation Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s side impact crash test. In comparison, the 2010 model earned the top rating of five stars under the previous crash standards.
“We continue to work toward achieving class-leading ratings on future models, and stand by the safety performance of our vehicles,” Honda said in a statement. The Japanese automaker added that it expects its new 2012 Civic model – due out early next year – to receive a five star rating.
The Civic wasn’t alone, however, as the Nissan Versa also only managed a two star rating in the side impact test. The Civic’s bigger brother – the Accord – did manage to pass with a five star rating.

I think its not really fair since its an older designed vehicle and its a new test. Honda's usually are very safe cars.

To see if the Civic really stands up to the test, we'll need to wait for the 2012 model. What's 5-stars then is 3-stars now and what's 5-stars now is 3-stars later.
I'm sure Honda and Toyota would never want to tarnish their bread and butter's reputation by releasing a car that isn't safe

Honda hasn't really been known for thick exterior metal.
On that note, the current Civic is supposed to be a pretty safe car for its segment.
I would certainly wait to see how the next-gen Civic does on this test.
