Default New Rice trend is drifting

Check out this vid of some lame street racer this guy just trashes his civic. Kids FWD cars are not made to drift or go fast.

I feel so sorry for that civic. But the drifting wasn't too bad for a FWD, at least to me it wasn't.

Oh well, prove me wrong and post some vids of yours, because i don't think that you drive any better than this "lame street racer".

Seeing GammaLex's description, I thought I was about to see some really bad drifting that ends up spinning out or crashing, but turns out he did almost as well as those Middle-East Asian people drifting in Camrys and other FWD cars. I'll give him a good for skills.

Wonder what kind of ticket the cop gave him in the end though. Should be some pretty serious misdemeanor.

You can't drift a FWD car.... dragging the handbrake is called sliding

Drifting is now gay because all the ricers screwed it up
I cant even recall how many times people ask me when I'm going to "drift" my car... I take a look at their 240sx's and RX-7s worth maybe the amount of cash I have in my pocket at the time and then look at my car and laugh... I cant just replace a fender on a SC300 like that... **** aint cheap on my car, plus I'd never do something like that (maybe 5 years ago when it was fun, now its stupid, like putting window washer LEDs on your car)

Its gay... Its the trendy thing to do... just as putting a big spoiler on a civic was the thing to do several years ago...
Now we've got ricers starting to buy up several Lexus vehicles and wanting 2jz-gte swaps and polluting our boards...

Gotta say it's pretty good driving skills to do what he did. But what amazes me is the braveness of the camera man to get that close to video it, a lot of the shots the car drift by inches away from the camera men, and it's hella funny at the end when he said "uhh...something is wrong".

You sound like a supra owner.

I dont personally drift, but If I were to do it, Id do it because its fun. And just for the record your car is not worth much more then a S14 240sx, and certainly worth less then a FD RX7. You cant expect anyone to pay for the amount of money you have invested on your car if you were to sell it. And car parts is a wonderful resource when it comes to replacing parts.

Theres noting absolutely gay about going to a US drift event and drive your car like you please. YOu might as well call other forms of track events like regular track events and even autocross gay and the trendy thing to do.

I agree totally. I thought he did pretty good. I was waiting for him to wrap it around a telephone pole or something

I couldn't download the video but I take it he was drifting on a public road. I agree with your FWD comments...and want to add that NO car is made to drift on a public road. Save drifting for where it belongs...on a track in competition.

Nor could I. Drifting is actually great fun when done properly (and who among those of us anywhere close to my or (I'm guessing) mmarshall's age didn't "drift" our (or our parent's) cars on empty snow covered parking lots way back when???? Or still do.........) and requires a great deal of skill. Certainly it's considered an acceptable form of competition when Bob Bondurant's racing school even has courses for drifting now!!! But no one should consider this or any other form of racing on public roads!!!!!

And let's all be clear what drifting is: controlled power oversteer NOT trail braking with the handbrake (altho the handbrake can be used to help break the rear end loose). Historical note: using the handbrake to trail-brake and perform a 180 degree turn is also called a "bootleg turn" since it was a technique used/popularized by bootleggers in outrunning police pursuit. And bootlegging evolved into NASCAR racing!!!!! So who knows where drifting will end up in racing history??

:
You're correct, mooretorque, that I practiced sliding and recovering from slides in the snow, but that was for the purpose of being able to drive safely in the winter....not to burn up rear tires street racing and drifting on dry pavement.
And...in those days, we didn't have ABS, traction, or stability controls, either. You had to KNOW how to drive. And most American cars ( Corvairs, Olds Toronados, and Cadillac Eldorados excepted) were front engine RWD that wasn't worth a d - - n on snow, driver skills or not. I know this sounds like heresy to most of you guys today, but we actually welcomed the switch to FWD in the late 70's and early 80's.....even though most of the American cars of that period were lemons (TRUST ME on that one). It gave us winter traction we never had before.....even more so with the first AWD American Motors Eagle....a car that revolutuionized powertrain engineering.

I'll give the guy credit for working with what he's got, but front wheel drive is just lame. if getting sideways is what you want, why drive a fwd car.

It cracks me up that anytime someone is getting sideways it's considered drifting now. People have been getting sideways in rwd cars for years, now it's called drifting like it's something new. and yes, it's fun to let the *** end hang out every once in a while.

I'd do it if I had a little crap box to burn out.
I don't think he liked his car too much. You could hear him over revving. You could see how badly he was killing those tires. And he doesn't have ghetto body mods. So I believe this guy was out to have some fun with a little powerful Civic. He probably owns something much nicer because he can drive well.

Sorry, mm, I should have been a little clearer. All that sliding around was, indeed, practice (at least, once I was more than 20 years old) since there was no other reasonable way to learn skid recovery techniques. But it was still fun!

Now, high performance driving schools have cars with adjustable outriggers that can take enough weight off the corners of the car to produce lurid slides at very low speeds. And there's the Bridgestone Winter Driving School at Steamboat Springs, CO, which provides the same benefit (in much the same way we used to obtain it).

And despite all the electronic aids we have, I still think car control skills are paramount. The laws of physics remain unchanged; the ability to anticipate situations and to drive with your attention considerably farther up the road than the 10-50 feet range which is focus point of the average "driver" ("steering wheel holding passenger" is a more apt description) are skills that can be taught. And this is why, as my two boys come of age, I will go with each one to Bondurant or one of the other schools for proper "driver's education".

Go enter the word "drift" on ebay motors and see all the crap that comes up...

I'm talking about S13s and FCs, not S14s and FDs... no one drifts S14s and FDs around here... I'm sorry you cant understand that...

My car is certainly worth as much as an FD and also much more so than a S14... FDs are worth around $8k-$10k and S14s are about $5k-$8k...
but I was comparing my car vs a $1-2k S13 or $2k FC... dirt cheap cars that people put ugly *** wings and stickers all over and call them a drift-car... then proceed to ask me when I'm going to "drift the soarer" like its even a soarer..

I dunno why you said I sound like a Supra owner? maybe the cost of the car? Supras are worth as much as people pay for them; if you don't like it then get over it

I like autocross, and I used to like drifting; until all the bandwagoneers jumped on and ruined it...
go enter the word "Drift" into ebay motors, i DARE you...
Lemme go find the drifter parking brake handle (i wonder what kind of car this is for?) or the drifter foglights!!!

Dang! look at this drifter bodykit!!! ITs mad tight y0!!!
dorifto master!

Holy crap!!! A drifter INTAKE!!!
omg teh h0tnesss!!!!!!11oneone

OMG its teh dorifto kit for meh cougar!!!!111
so tite!!!

Need I continue? This is the drift community now, there are a few hardcore enthusiasts that are truly dedicated to doing it, but every single day some newbie jumps on wanting to "drift" his or her car and asks questions about it.... and these same people are the ones that buy this crap and call themselves a drifter...
I wont associate myself with this crowd... just as the same I wouldnt associate myself with the Supra crowd for the longest time until the Arizona Supra owners were kicked out for the most part of supraforums and all other supra bulletin boards that actually matter
