Default Proper Jumper Start

Hey All,

I know this is a really newbish question but its better safe than sorry. My car is ready to come out of winter storage and the battery is dead. I didn't want to remove the battery to charge it, so last winter I picked up one of those portable battery boost devices.

I have been reading a few websites and there are generally two ways in jumpstarting a car:

1) Attach red to battery, attach black to battery --- start car --- disconnect black then red
2) Attach red to battery, attach black to engine block --- start car --- disconnect black then red

I am caught inbetween. I am leaning towards #1 at the moment.

Any help would be great! Thank you!

When jumping car to car, I always try to be standing right by battery to remove ground cable from one as soon as both motors are running. I've been under impresion that two alternators running at once can ruin electronics.

#2 is the recommended way. The reason is that you get a spark when you attach that last cable and in theory you want that spark as far away from the battery as possible - just in case it is leaking any gasses and then kaboom. Not sure if it has ever happened to anyone, but why take the chance?

Agree. That's the way my father did it and taught me how to do it. Reason was spark could cause battery to go boom. I don't know if today's batteries are different from years of past but I'll stick with method #2. Why chance it
