The E46 and E39 are the best looking BMWs ever IMHO. That said, this new 3 series is actually okay. Compared to all the oher BMW cars lately this one looks pretty good. Nothing about the styling is great, but I could actually live with it and I see some good aftermarket potnetial that could make the style really nice. I think the coupe version probably would look better and I would be more into buying a coupe anyway. For now, it is a car I woudn't rule out. 255HP sounds pretty good to me for a 3 series car. Knowing how fast the E46 330 could be, this car should perform great.

The posted article said this car has exemplary build and materials quality......I will wait until I see and inspect the car before I can comment on that. But I'm going to take that with a grain of salt....the recent new 7 and 5-series BOTH have been an awful letdown from their predecessors. Not only the I-Drive, but quality-wise, they both feel like shoddy tin compared to the older ones. Shut the doors...you will notice the heavy feel and SOLID "Thunk" of the older ones compared to the lightweight, tinny "thwack" on the new ones.
So....maybe the new 3-series has avoided these mistakes. I hope so. I'll comment more when I see it.

Kinda lost those great lines seen on the Bimmers of old, but it's still nice. The 3-Series has never been a loser, and this one certainly won't be any different. I actually really like the "spartan" black/aluminum interior on this one. Can't wait to see the coupe and the new M3...

It's funny now that you've mentioned this.
15 years ago, my parents visited a Mercedes showroom and was looking at this 300SEL sedan. The salesman kindly walked out and proudly asked anyone from my family to open the rear door of that car and feel/hear the way it closes. It was precisely a very solid thunk. Nothing less.
The salesman even offered to have the door swing open as wide as possible and had us slam shut it as hard as we could. He said that's how reliable/safe Mercedes cars are built to be.
Well, I can only imagine the look on that salesman's face when he sees the quality report on Mercedes cars nowadays.
Weird phenomenon, isn't it?
With this said, I'll return to the topic of this discussion. While it's true that BMWs have continued to change for the better or worse, it's funny how many BMW owners actually get stuck in the time frame their cars represent. I, for example, will always love and cherish the E36 even if it's 30 years old. The same is true with many other E30, 34, 31, etc. owners.
And as most of you would know, no one would ever get tired of owning an M1.
I personally think the new 3 series is too blended, too undistinctive, and too banglish. It just doesn't quite have that propeller like image/spirit that many BMWs are known for.

I really like the new 3 series.
At first - I didn't like the interior - and I still think it's lacking compared to other cars in the segment - but it is driver-centric; spartan yet functional. It's built for driving - nothing else. And, for some drivers, that's all they need and want.
