How fast is a Police Interceptor?
A buddy of mine just bought a 90-something Ford Crown Vic that was a former police car. I didn't get to race him in my stock GS4, but we had a quick launch up to 70 MPH and I was surprised his car was able to keep up with me. Had about a 1/4 tank of gas left, so my question is, is how fast are those police cars and did my gas tank affect my performance or are they really that quick?
note: I didn't floor it and neither did he

OK then, it was probablly my fault
I only went up to 5000 rpm and he was with me the whole time. It didn't seem like he floored it either. Either way, thanks for the replies. He was bragging about how his car was underrated in power, so I actually just thought it might have been enough to at least stay with a GS4.

The police interceptor is limited at 134, while other models are limited to 110Mph. Nothing special in them, just an extra 15HP or so more then the standard trim model. They have very good low end, but die out after 55Mph. However, the early 90's one shouldn’t even come CLOSE to you.
Nevertheless, an 04 will do a ¼ mile in a high 15's... low 16's with a good driver. Nothing to bring home about.

heh, crown vic's are like 17-18 second cars in the quarter mile... nothing special done to them performance wise for the police package.. just a heavier suspension, ect...

My dad is so in love with the Crown Vic because it is so spacious. In 1986 he bought an 87. It has 226k miles and still runs strong. Two years ago he bought an 89 Vic. And then two weeks ago he bought a 90 Vic. He just loves those cars, he is always complaining about how new cars are so small inside. Have you seen the trunk on these cars, you can have a picnic in there

As for the Interceptor - the previous comments all apply - but I'd like to add that it's Ford's 4.6 liter powering 'Vics now. I'm pretty sure the 5.0 liter was replaced in 1992 to compliment the car's new exterior.
And they remain pretty slow; due to all the additional (and varying) equipment installed in these cars, it's difficult to peg a definate performance figure, but I imagine that they do 60 mph in a little less than 9 seconds - which isn't horrible - but not all that impressive.
Your GS4 should have easily outrun the Vic. My guess is that he was all the way on the gas and just says he wasn't.
Regardless - they aren't bad cars so I wouldn't bust his junk about it.

And to answer GStateOM's question, here's what I found:
1998-present Interceptors run 0-60 in 8.4- 8.7 seconds, 1/4 mile in the mid 16's, top speed is 129 mph.
1991-1998 0-60 in 9.1, 1/4 mile high 16's, top speed 137 mph.

It's a 99
Raced him again today. Burned him badly.
But the dumbest thing is that afterward, he asked me how many horses did I have. I told him 300 and he said that he was surprised Lexus was able to put 300 horses onto a V6 (which he thought I was one)
