I've seen the articles on it. Looks nice the front 2/3's of the car. The rear 1/3 doesn't flow with the rest of the car. Looks like they just hacked off the rear. Maybe they were thinking of the utility of a hatchback in a supercar. At least they put nice wheels on it.
I thought the exact same thing, it just doesn't flow well. Looks like they took ideas from a bunch of different cars and threw them together with some Toyota badges. Got any engine pics of that thing?

Ya this came up like 3 months ago. Toyota said they'd make it in january and auction a few off at like $120k. Gets 570 miles on a 13.7 gallon tank if I remember correctly. 408 Horsepower. Designed by the same people that did the espirit/1st Gen GS/Maserati 4200 (or whatever you crazy kids call it these days.)

Toyota is planning a high-output hybrid supercar that could be on sale by 2007. The flagship Toyota would be the first production supercar with hybrid power, offering high performance with a low environmental impact.
‘If we do a supercar, we don’t want to copy everyone else,’ said Thierry Dombreval, marketing boss for Toyota Motor Europe. ‘With hybrid power we could mix high performance with green credentials.’
At this year’s Geneva Motor Show Italdesign showed the Alessandro Volta (above), a 402bhp
3.3-litre V6 hybrid supercar, with a claimed 155mph top speed, 0-62mph in 4.1sec and 38mpg. It was developed with Toyota.
Although the Volta is not a running prototype, Toyota Motor Europe’s research and development boss Kazuhiko Miyadera said he has driven the company’s high-performance hybrid test car. ‘Because of the steep torque curve of an electric motor, the acceleration is very good. It’s very quick,’ he said.
Toyota is exploring its first supercar to take advantage of its involvement in F1 and to keep up with arch-rival Nissan, which will unveil a 400bhp Skyline GT-R at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Toyota will also steal a march on Honda, which has canned an NSX replacement (right) in favour of a Porsche Boxster rival, still several years off.
‘A hybrid supercar is just right for Toyota. It is something different and fits our brand,’ said Dombreval. ‘We are leaders in hybrid technology and we could exploit it in this new way.’
But Toyota has to overcome the resistance of supercar buyers, who judge their purchases on factors such as engine size, badge credibility and racing heritage, as well as performance. ‘We don’t think this should be a problem. We could offer something new and different that also has strong performance and is green,’ said Dombreval.

I think it's considered " cheap " by the lofty standards of many here.
If they build something like this I hope they redesign it. The front end looks okay but the rear hatch back look is just not something you want to see in an exotic sports car. Also I hope they make it a two seater and not a 3 seater like pictured. Over all the car doesn't really look like a production run style exotic but more like a radio controled car.
On a side note, who do you think will really bring out a hybrid super car first? Toyota claims they will have it in 2007, but Honda showed the Hybrid Dualnote a couple of years ago. Obviously both companies are thinking the same thing, its just a matter of who will actually bring the real car out first. Or if one company will change their direction and thinking and drop the hybrid super car idea altogether.
