Default do i have a lemon?

i did search a bit but came up with all the different answers.

i bought my rsx a little over 2 years ago( may be a month) and i have a problem with check engine light on my acura. my car have been in the shop for 3 times now for the same problem and i think they reset the light or change the whole computer box or watever but the problem is still not fixed. i only drive my car on the weekend and have 24000 miles on ODO.

is there anything i can do other than making another visit to the shop? ( it's cool that they give me a new TL for a loner but i dont really have time to do that)

thanks for the help in advance.

First thing to look for when you get a CHECK ENGINE light is a loose gas cap. The fuel-filler system is designed to be air-tight and with a good vaccum, to keep gas vapors from evaporating out past the cap seal. Often, if the cap is not on tight enough (or if the seal is worn) the computer sensors will detect too much air leakage and flash the light. If tightening the cap...or replacing it with a new one....doesn't do the trick, THEN go on to more complex and expensive tests or parts.
Now...here's one thing to keep in mind....and a lot of people don't realize this. If you get a diagnostic hookup and it shows a computer code, that does NOT necessarily mean that that part has to be replaced. For instance, in the last post someone mentioned an oxygen sensor. If you get , say an "O2" code for the sensor or however the codes are labelled, that does NOT mean to just yank the old sensor out and put a new one in...YET. No...it means that from there you have to follow a list of procedures for further testing UNDER that code. These steps are outlined in the shop manual for that specific vehicle and engine-transmisson combination. If you follow the steps correctly, you may or may not have to end up replacing the part....depends on the specific problem that the sensors have detected and its ultimate cause after testing. These steps are written up by the engineers who designed that specific computer system for that specific vehicle.
You would be surprised at the number of service people who don't realize that.....even with the training they get.....and that is one of the reasons why so many people end up paying for so many new parts that often aren't needed.
