According to most muscle car afficionados the Mustang never WAS, and never WILL be considered American muslce with the puny engines they put out. Those little 200 hundred something cubic engine wielding cared were all designed for looks not power....It was marketing BS...Watch the muscle car specials on History Channel that are on like every other week...
American Muscle is Chevy Camaro, Chevy Corvette, Pontiac GTO, Olds Cutlass, Buicks, Plymouth Barracuda and Road Runner, Dodge Charger, MOPAR, etc...

I'd say they had a good run on American Muscle...and I'm a Corvette guy.
Yeah, while the first couple of years(64 / 65) the 289 CID hi po (271 hp) may not have been the match for the 389 tri power GTO in 1965, IMO the Mustang is most definitely a muscle car. Just like the Camaro / Firebird it also falls into the 'pony car' category, but there were plenty of Mustangs that were far from 'underpowered'. The early mustangs were pretty light cars as well.
There were several other engines to add to the list ISC5 listed as well off the top of my head 429CID, 390 CID, and the 351 came in two variants (351 Windsor small block and 351 Cleveland big block). The 302 also came in a 'boss' variety.
