This may be one of my main gripes. If I am road tripping, I want to stop at local spots / hole in the walls to eat. Pretty much will be forced to stop at a chain restaurant / fast food / gas stations / grocery store. Not a huge issue but not ideal.

I mean I think charging it once should be enough to get you around town for a week, maybe twice if you go out of town for activities.

my bad, I meant if I am driving to say South Carolina from Florida, On the journey I don't want to stop at Chipotle or BK. So I would have to stop at a charge point for 20 minutes then stop at a restaurant for 30-45 minutes and then continue my journey.

This is a big issue for me too. What do you do for driving around power when you get there. In NJ or OC its not an issue anymore because there are overnight level 2 options, but in WV thats still an issue.

yup, to me that's always the biggest issue. if this is resolved, ev is going to gain a lot in popularity imho

To @Hameed point using a Tesla is definitely the better option. Expect the hotel wasn’t charging any EVs. If I had rented a Tesla, surely a supercharger station is around. We have zero interest in renting or driving one.

So back to the TZ, many owner experiences will be similar to mine. Hit or miss with charging. To @situman point of we need better charging infrastructure which is something I 100% align with.
I own 3 EVs now, for last 5 years I am experienced EV driver.
I would not rent an EV. Charging is tied to your account with providers and this is not a solved problem when renting. Also, if I am in another country, i dont want to think about it.
If I am traveling with my car, i would pick hotel with EV charging. Not all do it but plenty do, here in Europe, and I never have a problem with it.

my first experience with driving an EV was a week long rental in san diego with a Genesis Electrified G80 on a business trip. charged it exactly one time at a supermarket a day before having to return it. Made me realize that EV's are totally feasible for in town driving. I had to create a charge point account and stuff but it's no different then signing up for whatever app that you download.

not sure who said that. there’s clearly a variety of experiences with charging. for example i haven’t ever used or tried to use a level 2 charger at a hotel. i’d rather go to a DCFC one for 15 minutes. i’ve wanted to use one in a parking garage, but they’re always in use.

I stand by what I said, too many EV owners paint a perfect picture of ownership when that is not the case.
and conversely, many ice owners say ev charging is universally horrible because of reliability problems and because it’s not as ‘convenient’ as going to any gas station, missing several points ev owners (not renters) enjoy, like charging at home.

point is, there’s a variety of experiences from great, to ok, to bad. my expectations for charging on the road were low, so the fact that it works at all is amazing to me. and now that my hyundai can also be charged at tesla superchargers is great. hyundai even sent the adapter for free.

but clearly ev charging infrastructure has a long way to go nationwide and globally. speed, reliability, availability, all classic scaling issues that will be solved.

If I had rented a Tesla, surely a supercharger station is around. We have zero interest in renting or driving one.
is that an anti-elon musk pov or something else?

If I could give a POV on this, to me as an ICE owner who is really interested in EVs and would like an EV but has what I feel are reasonable concerns surrounding EV use on trips, I feel like my concerns are always totally disregarded as being ridiculous and I am continually painted as being unreasonable and backwards by EV owners/fans for those concerns. So IMO thats where Mike's feedback there is coming from. You may not think you are being condescending and dismissive, but thats how it lands. Theres this idea that we need to conform to what is available to us and just suck it up vs wanting what is made to conform to our lifestyles and I think the latter is a very reasonable expectation for a consumer in any marketplace. Its not unreasonable for people to want what they spend huge amounts of money on to be serviceable for all their needs without unreasonable lifestyle changes. You are saying now that things still need to improve etc but you spent pages on here fighting with me and calling me unreasonable, trying to paint me as some niche buyer outside the mainstream etc because I don't want to stop multiple times on a very typical American road trip.

Honestly, the attitude turns me off from EV ownership altogether..

I think one of the issues is that if you experience a broken charger just once, while it may not be the end of the world, it is very inconvenient. This may be less of an issue with Tesla since each station has many, but for example, there are usually only 3 or 4 EA chargers at a station. I have run into a broken once when I used to charge on the road, when Audi gave 2 years of free charging for my Q8. 1 or 2 can be broken at a time, and then you either have to go somewhere else or wait until someone is finished. Just once is enough to turn me off. Obviously, I charge at home now.
