Default Auto unions, a source for good?

Hi everyone,

We've all seen the picket lines and factories shut down when auto unions strike.

Some people may think auto unions work as expected and protect the workers.
However, others may think auto unions make the mfg uncompetitive and cause too many problems.

What do you think?
Make your best case here!

They are a racket, and not just auto unions, pretty much any union these days.

Voted for “getting rid of them” Other manufacturers can build cars with non union members, so good riddance

now waiting for the “buy American and Union defenders” when they don’t buy those vehicles themselves

I haven't voted yet because I'm undecided.

And, I'll probably sheep and flip-flop all over the place until I hear everyone's ideas. Haha

However, I know my grand father would support unions because he worked a union job for the state for a total of 50 years and draws two pensions-so that's all I know about unions, which is next to nothing. Lol

Voted to get rid of them. They were great when there were no laws protecting worker's rights and etc. These days, unions seems to, SEEMS to represent something entirely different and the mission feels a whole lot different as well.

For many different reasons, I'm strongly in support of Autoworker-Unions....whether here in the U.S (UAW), Canada (UNIFOR), or in other countries. The last several new vehicles I have owned (as will my next one) have all been Union-built, both in the U.S. and in South Korea, a friendly country. Given the choice, I would rather that all of the vehicles sold in the U.S. market be built here, with unions, but, in lieu of that, or if that is not feasible, I have no problem with a union-built vehicle from a friendly country (Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, Japan, South Korea, etc.......)

I'm aware that union-leaders are not always saints......some of them have been corrupt, or have had ties with mobsters and organized crime. I undersrtand that.....and I am not defending it. But you don't toss out a whole bushel of apples for a couple of rotten ones.....and that is what we have law-enforcement for. Some unions also, at one time, would collect worker-dues and spend them in a manner, politically, that some members found objectionable. Many unions, since then, have had separate funds......workers could choose whether they wanted their dues-collections to go into either a political or non-political fund. Laws prevented money from one fund from being used for the other purpose.

This is a reflection of human nature in general, we are terrible at compromising - give someone a finger and they try to bite off your arm. Before unions workers had no protections and were essentially expendable. This is still the case in many branches of economy in the US, and widespread in developing countries. But once unions got the power, they choke employers, and employers rightfully respond by shifting manufacturing to other countries.

The VW plant in Chattanooga just voted to unionize, the first in the south.

I think we also need a thread on automotive CEO pay. Let’s cover the folks up top as well not just the hourly wage workers.

On a personal level I’ve been in a union, a union steward, management and a business owner so I see the merits and cons of unions pretty well.

I'm very curious how it will turn out. VW doesnt have much of a presence in the U.S. car market so I'm wondering if they will just shut it down and import their cars instead if the cost of doing that is negligent.
