A little bit of background. After Toyota has been caught falsifying crash test result at its Daihatsu subsidiary, the Japanese government ordered it to perform an internal audit to find if there were other irregularities. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/toyot...050839508.html Bottom line, Toyota has not only been cheating at Daihatsu, they have also been falsifying safety tests of several Toyota models. The issue is serious enough that Japanese government ordered Toyota to suspend shipments of 3 models. Toyota also reported that they have been cheating with engine certification.
Similarly, Honda and Mazda reported issues, but none of them as serious as Toyota.
Powerful investors are calling for sacking of Akio Toyoda as Chairman of the Board.
Quite a big difference between instant death from a collision vs. greenhouse pollution.
They are very much alike, as a society we try very hard to prevent both. When a corporation is guilty of both they don't deserve our money IMO. On collisions most do not result in instant death and often injury sometimes life changing the person suffers for the rest of their life.

These are kei cars, a collision can very much be a near death sentence with how small these vehicles are. Which is why it's ironic that Toyota would botch the most crucial aspect of a kei car.

Not kei cars. One is Corolla wagon, the other is Yaris-based SUV (which is also sold under Lexus brand in Europe).
i'm shocked, SHOCKED that there's cheating going on about complying with government regulations.
Well, that's one of the things that happens when regulations and requirements get to an unreasonable level...sometimes the companies have just had enough, are overwhelmed, and look for ways around it. You cannot just keep piling on more and more regulations forever.
