Default Annual license fees

I just got my renewal for my ‘15 GS350 F Sport, an eight year old car. $334! That’s California.

What’re you paying?

I forgot to mention that a smog check is required every other year. That’s an additional $40-80 depending. Thankfully, just every two years.

Illinois is $115 for plate renewals. It had been $98 for quite a while but was increased a couple of years ago.

In Virginia, it is between $30-35 a year for most everyday vehicles, depending on vehicle-weight. One reason the registration-fee is low in Virginia is that vehicle-owners pay a separate tax, each year, on assessed vehicle-value...the Personal-Property tax.

In many states, if a vehicle is 25 years or older, it is considered an Antique, and can quality for free or reduced-fee tags.

Be glad you don’t live in Washington state. This place practically steals from you, especially if you live between Seatac airport and Everett. My 2018 Audi SQ5 was still close to $600 for car tabs. Most of it is the tax from the new rail system they’re putting in.

$45 or something, it's crazy cheap for me. My custom plate cars are like $60? Idk, it's on auto renew and cheap enough I couldn't care less and I buy 3 year tags for my permanent cars

"personal property tax" just another euphemism for stealing part of what you've earned.

What you forget (and I have mentioned it before, several times) is that, in Virginia, the only reason we HAVE that annual car tax is because there are no County Income taxes....the State Constitution outlaws them. The County gets the vehicle-tax instead...which is only fair.

if that's your idea of fairness, enjoy.

No, it's not the "only" reason. PA has no county income tax, but has annual car registration fees.

Illinois renewals jumped from $101 to $151 in 2020. I have email confirmations for 10 renewals at the $151 rate, and dozens at the $101 rate before that.

here is the current fee schedule
