Thanks for explaining. Honestly I've driven both but didn't notice any difference in the drive. But now that I think about, I do feel the 3GS is a bit more "bitey", sturdier, more solid. But the 3GS is a better car overall in terms of looks, trimming, and drive. It's well worth the 10k jump over ES msrp at 35k at the time, just going on the exterior alone, IMO. But its not a car for everyone though. The 4GS is more roomy.
The difference in the drive comes out when you push the car more, but even in normal driving you appreciate the better suspension setups on RWD cars and the feel of thrust from the back vs being pulled from the front helps.
Well in northern states & Canada, unless they're used, finding cars with RWD is almost non-existent. Lexus doesn't even ship RWD to northern states & Canada, practically all IS models are AWD, and "THINK" ES is still FWD.

Again, in the north, AWD performs best in snow & ice conditions but ya should still install winter tires. FWD comes in 2nd for handling winter conditions. RWD is fine in snow & ice with a full set of winter tires.

Not sure what AWD bias / balance works best in (heavy) snow but good point -- ANYONE ELSE??

Honestly based on what you said here and elsewhere the GS is probably not for you since you don't appear to ever use its ability. There is a massive difference between the ES and GS for a driver......

‘you can get IS in rwd in all configurations. But GS and LS went awd a long time ago. No rwd 4Runners like the states. I don’t really care for rwd sedans. They should all be awd IMO

This is actually not true. FWD has some serious handling issues in snow and ice because the drive and steering wheels are the same, so if you lose traction when accelerating you also lose the ability to steer, and if you lose traction when steering you lose the ability to apply throttle. On snow tires I would drive a RWD in the snow every time over a FWD car.
People think FWD cars are better because they are easier to get moving, and people equate that to being better but thats the only advantage really.

You could still get the GS RWD up until the end and you can still get the LS RWD today. It depends on your region. Can't get a RWD one here, but I bought my 17 460 from Alabama and it was RWD.

LS500 here is awd only. 460 was awd for a long time as well. Same with GS. Except GSF

Vehemently Disagree. Finding an IS with RWD in northern states & Canada is extremely rare UNLESS it's used, &/or pre-circa 2017, &/or imported from the south. I'll bet big moola $$$$ that not a single northern Lexus dealership has IS in RWD - new or CPO. Care to wager?
Even in after market//online sales in northern states & canada, how many links can you post of post circa 2017 IS that's RWD, or used, that were NOT imported from the south? Please Research.

GS was RWD as standard until it ended, LS is still RWD.
You should drive them before making that decision.....

You could not get a GS or LS where I am in rwd. For at leas the last 5 years or so. If I spend more time in the US like I used to, then that would be a different story.
Outside of the metropolitan areas. I am sure Lexus doesn’t stock IS rwd

It’s all good. Happy you can see you might have been incorrect. Others can’t, I can
but back to IS. I simply can’t believe how far behind Lexus is in their powertrains What I find insulting is that Lexus detunes the 3.5 LMAO. But charges extra for full power.
