Default should i swap or build?

Hi am am new to these cars. I love it so far and i want to make it a bit faster around 280 hp and whatever fpt i can pull. It seem like there is only 1 swap people are doing into these cars and not many people out there building the stock engine. Can i get some advice on what i should do and what would be the most cost effective? to reach the 280ish mark. I have pulled 350 out of a 1.8 so i feel like 280 out of the 3.0 should be possible without to much effort.
Thanks in advance!

From what I have read and what I have seen everyone has so many different opinions. if you want 280. basic turbo set up stock fuel set up with like 5 pounds. a couple of guys I know did it and it held up. However, if you do it right you can always go faster if you want to, I dont agree with trying to go the cheap route but it can be done.

okay awesome do you know if I can do that on stock injectors and fuel pump?
also will I need to set up some computer management system when I put a turbo on?
and if so what would you recommend?
I was hoping to run a very small turbo to just make a few pounds of boost maybe eight or nine maximum and avoid turbo lag.
I'm not trying to build a funny car Id just like the car to run in the 13s maybe 12s

Welcome to CL.. I own a is300 on a stock motor on 14lbs of boost making just under 400hp its a NA-t setup minor head work like comperssion and machine shop work stock bottom end and tranny for your power goal a swap wouldn't be worth it. a fuel pump and injectors would be recommend and yes a ECU management i reccomend a AEM standalone.. I also think if u want to run 12 to 13's you would have to make more power than 280hp. Btw 400 hp on a stock setup is not reccomend with a stock tranny and bottom end but I don't abuse the car. Hope this helps

i think im gonna take that advice the only thing im still not sure about is what type of turbo to run.
I was thinking of retrofitting a t28 or somthing like that maybe a volvo turbo. any input on doing that? I would rebuild it first I just want something small to avoid turbo lag.

Are you manual or auto?

I only ask because you didnt specify what year or tranny you run?

Mine is an '02, the first year Lexus made manual 5 speed...

It's a 2003 manual 5 speed as well. W-55 tranny I also have a R154 as a back up if this one goes as far a turbo I went with 6262 WITH A .68 HOTSIDE TO KEEP TORQUE DOWN TO PRESERVE TRANSMISSON ..

.68 as opposed to what? .68 is somewhat small for that turbo, which would mean more torque and less lag as opposed to anything larger... I'm not even sure there really is anything smaller than .68 in a t4 housing...

I have a 2002 5 speed. Also i have been looking into the gte swap but the tranny is way pricey. Is there a way to strengthen the stock transmission so i can launch at 400 Hp?
