Default Huge Scratch - New Car

Hello,

I just got a 2016 CT200h ultra white with Obsidian roof.

Car is flawless except for 1 glaring scrach on the roof. And another smaller one next to it. I asked the dealer to fix but was not part of the deal...to no surprise they forgot but I didn't make a big fuss got a great deal on the car.

This scratch I guess went right down to the metal...showing rust. See below.

I've ordered Lexus touch up paint code 212 I intend to use.

How do I go about fixing this?
Do I use an abrasive tip to sand off the rust color first? I'm concerned about making it wider if I do.

I do not need showroom finish here just corrected enough to not worry about it at least for a while until it needs more touch up.

Thanks!

Depends how picky you are. The quick way is to get a fiberglass pen, clean out the scratch then apply touch up paint. To get it nearly seamless the scratches will have to be carefully sanded, filled, sanded, base coat, wet sanded, clear coat.

Not that picky but let's see, I may get more involved later when project times come back around.

Ok the fiberglass pen...i have a duplicator paint pen still laying around with clear coat and a white tip for what appears to be scratching. I assume thats what the tip is for on that

That's probably fiberglass. Be very CAREFUL not to get shards on your skin this is no joke the stuff is very irritating.

I would prep the area with a 2000 grit sandpaper (hole punch a piece and super glue to the end of a pencil eraser) or the fiberglass pen. I always mix the base coat with the clear coat at about a 1:4 ratio and then apply with a microdabber. It will likely be just fine after that. Mix the paint in small batches so that it flows nicely, you may need 2 batches for a scratch of that size.

If you need to level the paint, you can wet sand with 2000, 3000, 5000 then compound and polish. With the base and clear mixed together, it will be much easier to level than of you were to apply the coats separately.

thanks for your response. I've never heard of mixing the clear cost in 1:4, ill do that.
I'll figure out what applicator or microdabber. The brush what comes with it wasnt ideal in the past, hard to get the paint to finish smooth.

After a light sand to clean up the area and remove the rust, you would want to use primer on the area before the touch up paint.
This is an example of what you might need. https://touchupdirect.com/touch-up-p...=Lexus%20Paint
I post his as an example, I have not used it so cannot vouch for this particular brand.

I'd have a body shop at least blend it.....Its a fairly new car......

I may have a body shop or detailer take care of it eventually sometime soon here.
I butchered it with the touch-up.

Paint is not smooth sticks up a bit. Will likely go over it with a hand polishing compound i have and wax over for now. Then have a pro fix it up for me.
