Unhappy Clear Coat problems

i have a SC400 and the clear coat is basically "chipping" by the door. i believe the previous owner had painted that area and now it's peeling off like old skin. if i peel one part, then the area would just keep getting larger and larger.

so the question is, what can i do to basically stop this from happening more, besides re-painting the whole car? thanks in advance.

is it possible to just shoot some clear coat there and have them blend the clear coat? is there such a thing as blending clear coat?

What is sometimes done in this case is, you can remove whatever clear is flaking, and then feather the remaining solid edge of the clear as well as you can ( so you don't see an "edge"), with 1000 grit wet paper. Then wet sand the entire panel (also with 1000) and re-clear it.

If you do a good enough job feathering the clear around the area that's flaking, you won't see it after you respray the entire panel with clear. It's tricky in some cases but is done everyday.

Yes, if you had to, you could blend the base color onto the clear from that one spot after wet sanding with 800 or 1000 grit, then re-clear it. Some colors dictate blending into adjacent panels though in order to match , especially metallics, pearls, etc.

Whomever painted it didn't do something right, and the bond between base/clear failed.

A body shop will charge you $20 just for the paint. Your looking at a couple hours labor + paint/supplies. I'm guessing $150-$175, depending on who you know and where you are.
