Lexus Shows Who’s Boss Following Volvo EV Announcement

Lexus would like to remind the world that you don’t have to wait until 2019 to find an automaker that offers a full hybrid lineup.

If you pay attention to those “other brands” in the automotive world, you probably heard Volvo’s recent announcement that its entire lineup will be electrified by 2019. On the surface, it seems like quite the bold statement. But many, including Lexus UK director Ewan Shepherd, weren’t shocked at all. Or even impressed.

Mainly because Lexus already offers an entire range of hybrid models. But Shepherd also noted that Lexus is also already equipped to handle stricter forthcoming emissions laws. “When you look at the legislation that’s being proposed for 2040, only us and Tesla could meet those requirements right now,” Shepherd told Motor 1.

Indeed, the announcement from Volvo appears to be well-timed. The proposal Shepherd refers to is the UK government’s announcement that it is considering banning sales of new gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040. The sale of hybrids, however, would still be allowed.

And therein lies the catch. While Volvo’s announcement made it seem like the automaker would only offer all-electric vehicles by 2019, that isn’t the case. In fact, if you read the tiny print below that attention grabbing headline, you’ll notice that they intend to sell hybrids as well. And that includes vehicles equipped with mild hybrid systems.

Mile hybrid systems are merely small electric motors that help recover wasted energy and boost power. Volvo figures to also develop full-on EVs and plug-in hybrids, but hasn’t said what their overall mix will consist of. Lexus, on the other hand, already sports such a lineup (minus an EV). So they won’t really be affected if the proposal passes.

Still, it’s pretty funny that Lexus is so quick to bash Volvo for their “major” announcement. Obviously, the fact that it garnered so much media attention got Lexus execs a little peeved. And who can blame them? After all, they’ve been at the forefront of the hybrid game for years now.
