Lexus LS-FC Concept Appears to Be in the Works
Recent trademark filing hints that LS-based fuel cell concept is coming.
Lexus apparently isn’t done exploring fuel cell propulsion. Nor is it done introducing new variants of its new flagship sedan. The luxury automaker recently filed a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a Lexus LS-FC Concept, which seems to indicate that they will indeed build a fuel cell variant of the new LS.
A Lexus LS-FC would represent the brand’s second fuel cell powered concept. The LF-FC concept bowed at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, and is now enjoying retirement in Lexus’ Dubai bistro. Interestingly enough, the LF-FC gave us a preview of the design language we’re now seeing on the production LS sedan.
This time around, we might be seeing a fuel cell concept that actually makes it to production. It would make sense to use the LS as a rollout for the technology. The result would be a range topping showpiece that could carry a large price tag and loads of new tech. It would also help further Toyota’s mission to sell more fuel cell cars.
If built, the Lexus LS-FC would slot at the top of the LS lineup, which includes the gas powered LS 500, hyrid LS 500h, and the likely plug-in hybrid. Rumors have swirled for years that we’d see a fuel cell powered Lexus in the year 2020. Now they might be coming true in the form of the LS-FC.
