Is the Lexus IS F the Perfect Sleeper?

By -

Lots of people sleep on the Lexus IS F, but you certainly shouldn’t, says Roads Untraveled.

When the Lexus IS F debuted many years ago, most folks assumed that it was a direct shot at both the BMW M3 and Mercedes C63 AMG. But in typical Lexus fashion, they weren’t interested in beating either in outright performance. Rather, they built a fast car that did everything well. It was capable, yet refined and luxurious.

And perhaps above all, it’s a real sleeper. That much is evident from this Roads Untraveled review. Our host points out that the IS F is one of those not so “shouty, enthusiast cars.” It’s the kind of car that only those with a “keen eye” can spot. The naturally aspirated V8 and rear wheel drive configuration is old school, and there’s little on the outside to tip off outsiders as to what it’s capable of.

Despite pumping out a little over 400 horsepower and possessing excellent grip, the IS F is very smooth. Which is pretty much what you would expect from any Lexus. And perhaps the best thing about the car is that most folks don’t know what it is. While everyone knows the M3 and AMG monikers. few outside of the Lexus enthusiast community know much about the IS F.

And this video is a reminder that that should change. Because this is a great all-around performer and a comfortable commuter. But then again, maybe it’s best if we keep the Lexus IS F under wraps. After all, one of the most appealing things about the car is its sleeper status. Perhaps we should just keep it that way. And continue to enjoy the surprised look on the faces of anyone who opposes it.
