Just read a post on Autoblog stating that Toyota is being sued for defective 8 speed transmission issues. According to the article ES cars from 2019 to present are included. Class action lawsuit filed late 2025.
Considering the ten-year span between the first affected models and the most recent ones, it appears that Toyota has not pinned down the root cause of the issue.
In one of his videos, CCN said the real issue is the final drive, which is different in the cars and trucks, and explains why the car applications are having trouble but the trucks are not.

I thought the Highlander was the most notorious for failed transmissions?
Have we read of a single failure of the ES 8 speed on this forum? I mean I get it's a small sample size but I don't recall seeing any.
I've not seen one. In a very active facebook es350 group I just saw one failure recently reported, a 2021 at 76k miles, iirc. First and only one I've seen
not trying to pile on but on FB market i saw a 2019-ish 7ES350 for 7k with a broken tranny. if i find it again ill post the ad. hopefully not too common but makes one miss the 6 speed auto from the 6ES. those things don't seem to have any shifting issues at all.

I'm sure there's one somewhere - just saying doesn't seem to be widespread failures. Watch mine blow up tomorrow

Agreed. There's nothing remotely close to that hair-raising Highlander thread. Lots of people reporting high-mileage with no tranny issues. I have no clue why a transmission would be more prone to failure in one model vs another, but it seems the ESs are pretty safe.

I wish that Toyota didn't change the 7 gen cars from a 6 speed to an 8 speed. That transmission shifted so smoothly that you didn't feel it. Smooth as a baby's ***...
