Hey,
I was just wondering if anyone has done what it takes to fix the obnoxious blinking of the dash guages? What does it take? How much will it cost per needle?

This is very easy. Just turn down the brightness of the display. I think it looks better anyways.

What happens is the transistors in those needles become too faint to hold the power load, or, literally lose contact and come detached. It should be just fine if you turn the little brightness display **** (to the right of the steering wheels) down to the middle or a bit to the left.

my temp guage is like that......but it just goes on...or off. doesn't flicker too much. i hear it costs an arm and a leg to fix. i'd just leave it alone until the whole thing dies out.

well... all I can say is welcome to the club. It seems to be a problem on virtually every old SC. Like the previous poster said turning down the brightness will temporarily fix the problem but then the gauges arent very visible in some conditions. In addition, it does cost an arm and a leg to fix because lexus only sells the entire unit which will cost you a few hundred dollars. A while back someone had an intersting idea... paint the orange part of the gauges with black light reflective paint and install black light bulbs instead of the ordinary gauge lights. I think that would be awesome if it was done carefully and actually worked.... just an idea.

if anyone actually done painting technique, I love to see how it is. Everyday, when I'm in the car, I'm thinking how to fix this problems
I found thin grow in dard kinda tape in auto store, but i think paint is more effective...I even went to art craft department store to get some ideas..
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I'm still thinking of any other ideas....

here <atlanta> is around $800 for the repair, and they replace the whole cluster.. ouch

Some dealers are lazy, and want to replace the whole thing. My temp gauge went out a while ago, and my dealer (they all know me by name now) said they can do particular gauges. I'm half tempted to see how hard it is to pull apart that thing and do it myself, can't be much harder than trying to jack the mainboard out of a laptop

My guages are the same way, especially when it is hot out. I just turn down the guages for a few minutes then they are fine.

Instead of using black light paint, I want to use glow in the dark gun site paint (red) and have a blue bulb put in (like on VWs).

I was quoted like $350 for the whole gauge cluster.Taking it apart shouldn't be a problem. I just wish I could buy the one needle instead of the whole dash cluster. (Jeff Watson 1-800-327-2087)

Maybe we could go into it together and split the cost. I just need the RPM needle. Then those that want the others could chip in for their part.

Just a thought.

I'm the one that orginally suggested using blacklight reactive paint, but your idea sounds even better. Do you have a source for the gun sight paint? I believe that it puts out a slight radiation? I've never seen it for sale before. Anyways, if you do find a source for it, please let all of us know. sounds like a great idea for all us SC owners.

From what I was told - The small guages can be replaced seperately, but the Tach and spedo have to be replaced as a pair. The whole cluster need not be bought. Anyway - Hope this helps.

You can buy gunsight paint anywhere that sells guns or hunting equipment. Gunsight paint does give off a small amount of radiation, but equal or less than watches with glowing hands do. Dont worry about radiation from gun site paint or watches, its not nearly enough to harm you.

I personally like that deep blue that VW guages have and the deep red needles they have. I believe we have 12V dash bulbs, so it shouldnt be a problem finding a blue bulb.
