I have the same problem and the dealer didn't have any good options for me.

L.L.S. (our CL lighting vendor) is offering a group buy (assuming enough people sign up, I don't think they have yet) on updated gauge lighting - that's on my Christmas shopping list.

i remember reading that there is some trick you can do to keep it bright for couple of weeks, then you have to do it again. something like keep the headlights on, turn off teh car, and then turn the **** all the way to bright and start the car again. i will see if i can search something on this

Question

I suppose it can be done, but why? The reason the display dims at night is to improve one's ability to see in low light settings (dilation of pupil to let more of the available light in, increased sensitivity of rods, etc etc). Profiling in the parking lot is one thing, driving at night another.

Please tell me that you're not night blinding yourself while driving.........................

Well I have two comments on this:

-Your gauges may be dimmer than normal day and night right now... quite a few CL members (including myself) have noticed that cold weather seems to cause the overall brightness of our gauges to drop a bit.

-If you really wanted to be ghetto about it... do you see the two light sensors on top of your dash (two black round spots right up next to the front windshield)? Find some way to get them to register an excessive amount of light at all times. Maybe tape a self-contained LED on top of each one individually... an LED like that could run for months straight on a little tiny battery and still convince the light sensors that it was a sunny day outside.

You will have to turn your headlights on manually, but your stuff should stay bright or at least much brighter than before.

I agree it's lame. The variable adjustment is nice, but they should have one 'click' up setting on the brightness *** that tells it to go full brightness despite whatever the headlights and light sensors are telling it at the time.

Actually to be honest I wish my gauges were LED like on the LS430.. I'm not too fond of the look of the operton gauges that the GS has. (better than most cars, but still not as nice as the LS)

Bad idea. You can make it brighter at night but it will cost you your night vision and possibly safety.

well on the other hand i still think the GS has one of the most brilliant setup (considering its age and even now) out there. i sorta find it more exciting than my sc430 or the new ls430 in some aspect. it's just so special

regarding the light, i agree, there is a reason why the lights dim down when the headlights are on, you don't want too much glare when it's dark outside

playing with the light sensors at the top probably wont' help much though, coz' after all, if it's night time outside, it's still going to register as "dark"?

I have this same problem....at night they are too damn dim for me....

conversely, during the day they get nice and bright but when you go under a tunnel, they dim again

How is the car going to know it's dark? It doesn't have a seasonally adjusted internal clock and weather sensor or anything that fancy. The only way it determines what to do with the headlights and interior light brightness is with those two black light sensors up next to the windshield.

I've already confirmed this works by using two small flashlights and shining them on those sensors for a few seconds. The dash got real bright until I turned the flashlights back off.

well if you somehow tell the two sensors to think it's always bright outside (so you get the brighter guages), then basically you lose your auto headlights once and for all too

I have to agree with our resident Doctor.

I find the gauges absolutely wonderful in my GS. It is never too light or too dark for me. Just perfect!!!

This setup on the 3rd gen GS looks soooo cooool

from the trend (ls430, sc430, the new gs), seems like lexus is going to use white in their guages huh? that's nice, i love that idea. very classy and clear!

There does not appear to be a good solution - most of the time the light sensors on the dash "get it right" but sometimes the gauges end up too dark.
Some cars as suggested earlier have a end position on the dimmer control that allows for full brightness, it appears that in our cars the dimmer is in series with the light sensors.

yeah on the GS i don't think there is a "end" position. on my sc430 there is a end position where it's a lot brighter. i wonder if that stays the same when the headlights turns on though
