92 SC400 remote entry key has failed
Hello everyone. Well, My remote entry key ( the one with the little button on it's side that, when pressed, locks and unlocks the door locks) has finally died. Lots of corrosion on it's internal circuit board. Was intermittent for that last 6 months, even after cleaning the board and it's components. Did the 94.9FM test - nothing. The 10 lock/unlock sequence test confirmed. New battery of course. My ohmeter confirms that the little switch operates AOK.
OK - I probably need a replacement. I understand that I also need a little module to put in the ECU as well. Dealer wants, I believe, $250.00 for the key and the module.
Any ideas on more economical sources, or ???
Thanks for any help that you can offer.
Mike

Wow the inside of the key was corroded? I am kind of surprised. I lived by the beach and my key never got like that. Did you drop it in water a few times? Maybe I should pop my key open and check.

To the issue of corrosion - I had not opened the key since 1992. Almost 10 years had passed. The corrosion was white in color, a a small speck of rusty material near the solder point of the circuit link to the upper body of the actual key stock. The rubber seal around the battery was soft and still round. The battery had very little corrosion on it where the negative side contact strip interfaces with the battery shell. The car had been in Las Vegas, NV since 1992. As to dropping it in water or perhaps in the washer if I had forgotten to remove from my pocket, I cannot recall. It is a 10+ year old key, so I figured that since the inner shell is not sealed 100% that it most likely acquired moisture when I took the keys with me on snow skiing trips, and given that after I fall and gather snow in every orifice of my ski suit...

I have check out several lexus parts sites that sell two remote access keys and ECU module ( uncut keys ) for about $242-245 for the set. I have also factored that getting them cut runs about $15 each, so about $300.00 with shipping handling. Then, I think about how nice it would be to have a fairly basic after market alarm / remote entry system that would not only work the locks, but the trunk and windows, etc... for about the same price installed. Anyone pondered this option (or done it) , comments and suggestions?
