Default The truth about the Octane

I was told by my salesman that it was okay to use less than the recommended octane in my 2011 Rx350. That it would do no harm to the engine but may result in lower mileage. If I noticed a pinging I could simply go to the next level octane. I was told by other consumers that using less than the recommended octane gas might invalidate the warranty because Lexus service can detect it when the vehicle comes in for scheduled service.

Doesn't the RX350 require only regular gas - 87 octane?

For those who live in Flatland, FL and who own an RX350 which states in the Owner's Manual to use 91 octane or better fuel can probably get away using a lower grade than what is recommended. This is especially true for just running around town. The engine will automatically adjust to the lower grade fuel. You may notice lower MPG and less power.

For someone who lives in a more hilly area of the country, who rides around with a full cabin of individuals and cases where the cargo area might be full of luggage during a trip might find the use of a higher octane fuel beneficial due to the extra strain on the engine.

So in short, YMMV.

Depends on the model year in question. The best place to get answers for your particular vehicle is in your Owner's Manual. Regarding 3rd Generation RX350 the 2010 RX350, for example, suggests you run 91 octane or higher according to its Owner's Manual. Same with the 2011 MY. However, starting with the 2012 model year there were changes made such that it requires only 87 octane. The same continues to be true for 2013 and 2014 model years.

All this can be researched online at:
