5w20 or 5w30 on 2009 RX 350, Any Lexus NA Official Statement?
Hi,
Browsing through the various threads and see that there was a TSB that saids to use 5W20 but this was for 2006 vehicles and even though my 2009 RX 350's engine is listed on the TSB, want to know what is the official statement of Lexus as I know the manual is still stating to use 5W30 oil for oil changes? Wondering if anyone on here has experience using both, and is 5W20 really getting better mileage, and additionally, is there any official word from Lexus stating which we should use? I have read multiple threads with dealers using different oils, 5w30 or 5w20 and also some using 10w30 as well. I am looking to changing the oil myself like I did with my previous car and wanted to see if I could get some opinions and suggestions. Thanks.
Dave

You can use either 5W20 or 5W30 in your 2009 RX350. If given a choice, I would choose 5W20. There is plenty of protection there for your engine. With the tight tolerances in the newer engines the heavier weight oil does have a slight affect on MPG. In today's engines with the newer gasolines there is less piston blow-by and less contaminates getting into the oil. So with cleaner oil in your crankcase those 5K mile oil changes should keep your engine running for a long, long time.
And, if you go with a synthetic 5W20 you get extra protection benefits.
Use a good oil. Get a good filter (stock up from Sewell with the OEM).

Also, am wondering if you use the same dealership(s) I have used here in FL. Twice, not once but twice, I was told the Owner's Manual was wrong when I questioned the difference of what they were telling me versus what was in the manual. Those two items were:
1. That the 2004 RX330 HAD to use premium fuel even though the manual and even the brochure stated it was just "recommended."
2. The other was on the topic of five tire rotations instead of four tire rotations. I wanted the spare to be part of the rotation sequence and the dealer told me they did not do that and it was "not recommended" regardless that it was mentioned in the manual.

Obviously, that dealer does not read Toyota's own Service Bulletins. As I posted on the other thread on this topic, using 5W20 will not void your warranty and in fact has been allowed since February 2006 in certain engines. See attached.

I cannot comment on your point 1., however on point 2. I can state that my Lexus dealer does not accept to rotate five tires, only four (fronts to back and vice-versa). The object of the 5000 mile rotation is precisely to maintain tire wear as close as reasonably possible on the five tire rotation, otherwise, if the alignment is OK, there is really no need to rotate every 5000 miles if you are just going to switch front to back. Then a half-life should be sufficient.
My Lexus dealer (Kendall Lexus) also sends me notices that the oil needs to be changed every four months or 5000 miles (instead of six months or 5000miles), that the air filters need to be changed twice as often as Lexus recommends etc... Really poor style and I wonder if it is in some way illegal or in contravention of Lexus agreements for them to do so. But they are getting away with it (not with me, though).
