Rear Hatch Only Opens With Remote or button in car.

For some reason my rear hatch will only open if I use the button on the remote or the button on the inside of the car, not when I push the button on the back of the car.

Any thoughts?

That is a manual release button above the license plate. The button on the edge of the rear hatch is an automatic close.

Exactly. The door doesn't open when I press the manual release button.

Possible corroded contacts inside the rubber 'boot' covering the switch or loose wires.
Removing the inside plastic panel to reveal the area for further investigation might help.
