I assume by 'fuel light' you mean the low fuel warning light. In my experience over 240K miles, the light comes on when there are about 3 gallons still in the tank.

I did some research and I found out that the RX300 models from 1997-2000 has a capacity of 17.2 gallons. The models from 2001-2003 has 19.8 gallons.


I have a 2001 model. Yesterday, my gas meter was touching the empty line, almost covering the whole line with its pointer. When I went to fill up gas, I only got in 16.7 gallons in. So I'm assuming that I have 3.1 gallons of gas (or much less) left before I filled gas.

The meter isn't probably accurate, but I am still wondering how much gas I really had left before filling it up. I am still researching on this.

I'm still wondering about everyone else's experience on this. How many gallons of gas is still in the tank when the light turns on at that moment?

Gas pump kicks off at about 17.5 if I fill up as soon as lite comes on. 2002.

I ran out of gas twice. when filled up, strangely it only took 19.1 gallons. I only fill up when the light comes on. at that point, I fill up anywhere from 16.8 to 17.5 gallons.

It's hard on the fuel pump when you let your tank run that low because he fuel pump is exposed to the air and runs hot. The fuel keeps it running cool this was told to me by Lexus tech people.

Mellon: I too have run out of gas in my 99 RX, on two occasions, both times when I know for a fact there are about 3.0 gallons still in the tank. No one can explain what is going on. Dealer said it would be an expensive investigation because they would have to drop the tank, which on an AWD RX is a time-consuming process. I simply try to fill up before the low-fuel light comes on, because once it does I have no more than 10 miles to drive before it stops running.
