Default fuel light means...?!

well of course i know that means i have to get gas soon...

but actually, how soon?! in the manual for my acura it says that when the light is on i have another 3 gallons. however i couldnt' find anything about the gs4 in the lexus manual at all.

i ask coz' this is what happened. before i set off from LA back to here (san jose) i got a full tank of gas. since the advertised gas mileage was 24 for freeway, i thought it should be no problem coz' the trip was 350 miles and the tank of gas should be good for 475 miles (24 x 19.8).

however when i was 40 miles away from san jose the fuel light was on and i was like wtf? well i arrived safely and stopped at a gas station for gas.

to my surprise, when i filled it up, it ONLY filled the tank with 14.6 gallons. keep in mind this is AFTER i drove over 40 miles with the light on. that means when the fuel light comes on, i still have MORE than 5 gallons of gas to use?! man that's like 25% of the whole tank.

yeah the advertised hwy mileage is so and so, but on the real road you have really gusty windy weather, and in sedan shaped cars, your optimal air resistance peaks at around 55 mph. anything faster or slower, you will burn more gas just to defeat the air resistance. i don't think u were cruising at 55 the whole way. and plus, hwy mileage is tested using some unreal method.
my dad told me a story: when he was in high school, he got a summer job driving brand new nissan cars fresh off the conveyor belt to the dock, for shipping. he said there was less than 4 liters of gas i think to begin with i think, just enough for the fuel to travel through all the hoses in between the gas tank in the back of the car to the engine up front. he said the fuel empty light obviously, was always on.
btw, if you eventually run out of gas and stall, that's not good news.

oh no, that's not my point. of course i wouldn't trust the 24 figure. i was thinking if the advertise value is 24mpg (=475 miles) i should have no problem getting 350 miles

my main concern was when actually does the fuel light come on. when there are still more than 5 gallons of gas left in the tank?! imho that's a bit too much. of course it's a good alarm signal to me

but for the record, during the trip i averaged 23.5mpg. believe it or not

If someone has concrete numbers, I'd like to know also. I usually refill at around the 1/4 tank line. Recently, I had to run a few urgent errands and was not able to get to a gas station right away. About 30 miles from home, the light came on. I made it home fine and refilled the next morning. I decided to check the specs when I got home and the manual said to get gas as soon as posisble when the light comes on. All my other cars had a gallons-remaining number. Why would Lexus do this and tell us the obvious?

Please if someone has any numbers. I too was questioning this. The manual doesn't say anything that helped me.

Per my personal experience, it's about 3 gallons left when the fuel light indicator is on. Full tank is 19 gallons. That means when you see the light your car can still run 40-60 miles.

Does the GS4 have a bigger tank than the GS3. I thought I had an 18Gallon tank, not a 19.4 Gallon. This could be the discrepancy.

wow....

this info i never knew....

how much gallons can a gs300 tank hold???

this could be the problem solver for so many things for me... every time i fill up for 10$ after 2 days it goes to empty again... damit... car eats gas up de ****... @ the same time my friend fills up from a empty tank and puts 10$ in ... his gas lasts 4-5 days .. and he drives about the same miles as me.... then again... he has a camry...

try not to do this (running with the fuel light on)
unless you have to.

There are a lot of dirt, water, or other stuff that are not gasoline, these things are heavier and stay at the bottom of the tank (deposited inside your gas tank over years), running on low gas will cause the engine to suck these dirt and eventualy clogged up your injectors.

you are not running jet fuel, it's not 100% clean.

Plus, gasoline is what cools your fuel pump; run tank low/dry, run fuel pump hot = premature pump failure (which cannot be cured by dumping Viagra in the tank).

umm.... ok... i might be getting it wrong, but i always thought the car pump gas from the BOTTOM of the tank? i mean, it would be quite a complicated mechanism if you have to always pump gas from the TOP of the tank to the engine?

well i am sure the gs4 has a 19.8 gallons tank, i read it again yesterday in the manual. the info for gs3 is in there too, i can check it out tonight...

I recently drove my SC300 from LA to Sacramento on one tank. I thought I would easily make it since it is 400 miles but my gas light turned on 15 miles before the destination. I reluctantly pushed onwards and made it but when I filled the tank it filled up 18.106 gallons on a 18.2 gallon tank. That is way too close. So I guess I have 20 miles after the light goes on.

you guys think you got it bad. i drive a first Gen Gs 300 and i have a 21.1 gallon tank. i get about 300 miles to the tank. and when i pump i pump around 18 gallons. so that means i get around 17 miles to the gallon. i drive mostly city and freeway 50/50. thats one thing i don't like about my car is the gas milege. and also when the light comes on you get around another 40-60 miles. most i've gone is around 40 miles and pumped around almost 19 gallons. but you have to think that those 2 gallons left over are the stuff the pump can suck up, fuel inside the pump, fuel in the lines, and fuel in the filter. and other stuff. its not a good idea to run fuel low. as it was mention already that it will make your fuel pump get hot making it break sooner than the car's life
