Default How much have you towed in your RX300?

Hi all:

I'm looking at buying a boat and need to haul it approx 100 miles (no really bad hills) to the lake and then leaving it there. The maximum towing capacity of the RX is listed as 3500 pounds. The boat and trailer are 4300 pounds and I can adjust the tongue weight by the position of the boat on the trailer. The trailer has hydraulic brakes.

Do you think I'll be OK for a single, short distance trip? I have a 1999 AWD with the towing package?

Thanks.

Transmission is the achilles heel for these RXs.

U-haul will rent you a full size pick-up with 6k towing pkg, for $19.95 plus mileage.
200 miles round trip would be about $100 -$120.
(I don't think they do one-way rentals on those pick-ups)

Consider other options but RX can do it. I would pick 4am as departure time. Once you reach cruising speed, the transmission locks up. So you should avoid acceleration and deceleration. Add 45 min break after 50 miles.

Also empty out the RX. Driver +1.

I'm sure the drivetrain can handle it, atleast for one trip. BUT, the brakes. That is a lot of weight to stop, so definitely make sure your brakes are up to par.

Also, god forbid anything happens, you will be held liable. Because you are hauling more than you should be.

Thanks all. Yes, I think I could do it but after I had posted I checked the Uhaul site and sure enough, they have a 1/2 ton pickup as Raoul says so I think I'll just go that way. Up to 3500 I would have tried but I'm aware of the potential for a transmission catastrophy!

Good call on going with Uhaul. I towed my 3500lb boat and trailer, for about 200 miles with some small hills. The tranny did not like it at all. That night, it was making a slight whinning sound. Luckily, the sound went away the next morning after everything cooled down, and never heard it again, but never towed again with it either.

Aha, I see that you have a Lexus pick-up truck just like I had a Mercedes 300 SD "pick-up truck." Ladders, paint buckets tools, dirt. That is when I had my rental property. Then I sold both and graduated to a Lexus RX300 "pick-up truck." Not quite as much of a load as your bricks, but for bags of landscaping dirt etc. it is just fine.

Default I've towed 9000 lbs!

Ok, it was only about 1 mile and about 5mph but it was cool.
You're not going to see me on the highway doing this.
