10k oci? Wow, I don't have the b*lls to do that. I try not to go over 5k miles (my oci is usually 4k miles), and most of my driving is highway.
Hypervish- I figured I'd hear something about that 10k oci. Everyone has a different opinion on the oil change interval thing. I don't want to start another long debate on the subject, but just want to let others know what I have experienced and done for maintenance on my RX while reaching the 200k mark. Through the years I've gone from 3k up to 5k with the conventional oils on different vehicles. I used to have a BMW X5 3.0i that recommended synthetic with 15k intervals! I just couldn't do the 15k thing. From what I've read the technology today in engineered lubricants or synthetics prevents the thermal breakdown and holds sludge factor down. Synthetics supposedly can go longer between change intervals. The weak link here in my opinion is the oil filter. Thus, I always us an 'extended mileage' or premium filter on the 10k intervals. I've had my RX since I drove it off the lot with 75 miles on the OD, so I know everything that has been done to it for over 10 years now. I do one quirky little thing on my oil changes that other might do. I drain the oil out and let it sit for 4-5 hours or sometimes overnight to drain every last drop of old oil out. Then I refill it along with the new filter of course. My RX might run 1/4 to 1/2 qt low and I check it regularly and top it off whenever it does. It might take 1 qt over the 10k oil change interval. And that is what it is doing now at 206k. Previously it would hardly run low at all. I've done the 10k oci for about 8 of the 10 years I've owned this RX, so I feel like if there were going to be some harmful effects of this practice, I expect it would have shown up by now.
