Default Is it over? Transmission whine, slipping, then dead

Folks, is this the typical pattern for failure? whining loudly, slippage, then no movement? What have been your options for repair/replacement?

thanks
jon

Sorry to hear... Though no expert, it obviously doesn't sound good. How many miles? Have you recently flushed/changed tranny fluid?

226,000
good color fluid, only used OEM
filter and oil change 1 year ago.

motor just revs up, doesn't engage.
any options? how much would rebuilt cost for this?
would it even be worth it at these motor miles?

thanks

doesn't sound good. I personally wouldn't spend big bucks on a car with a quarter of a million miles on it! I think you could argue you got your money's worth especially if you've had it any length of time. New/rebuilt transmissions from my reading here seem to be about $2-4.5 K depending on who and where it's done.

Two additional questions...year of car, FWD or AWD?

Hi - I am a RX300 (1999) owner that worries about this day that may have well come for you - when the tranny goes.

Frankly, if you love the car and other than the tranny it's in good shape, why not spend $5k for a new transmission and have a wonderful car that will very likely go another 50-150K.

Better that than spend $35-40K for new RX (unless you really want one, of course).

How long did it whine before the transmission went out? My transmission starting to whine shortly after having the transmission fluid changed at my local toyota dealership. around 200,000miles.

Welcome to the club Sarah.

Considering this is a 6 year old thread, you may not get an answer from the OP. However, in regards to your question, have you looked at the fluid level since they serviced it, and have you taken it back to them to inquire about the noise? Noises can be generated from a number of sources, and low fluid is one of them.

When my tranny went out, it only took 2-3 weeks from the first slippage to toasting 2nd & 3rd gear. There was very little whinning, except when I revved it during acceleration (slipping third gear).
