overheating issues, quite intresting...
hi
so first off yes i did search, and none matched my exact issue
today after work I drove home, when I got home, i noticed steam out from under my hood and could hear the coolant boiling over the reservoir, I found this odd as my temp gauge was reading normal, dead in the middle
as I was diagnosing I found that my heater does NOT blow hot, also I found that my thermostat is opening, and yet still it it getting really hot in the radiator
what do you guys think? what should I check next?
thanks!

here are my compression numbers
cyl # 1: 220
cyl # 2: 220
cyl 3 3: 210
cyl # 4: 215
cyl # 5: 210
cyl # 6: 209
that looks good to me, what other options for diagnosis are there?

I would also pressure test the radiator cap. If it fails, it cannot create proper pressure in the coolant system, and your fluid is much more likely to boil over, as the pressure increases the boiling point of the fluid.
Also does the car have a turbo? I have seen odd issues with headgaskets that only push fluid under full boost/load. And as mak89 said, a leak down test would be a more thorough way of testing the system. Have you noticed any exhaust/fuel smell in the coolant, or can you see oil droplets floating on top of the coolant?
Thanks,
Rick

thanks for all the good ideas folks
my car is turbocharged yes, and I has also converted to an electric fan, which I believe was causing the issue with an intermittent control unit
second issue was no heat inside, found out my vacuum line for the heater control valve had disconnected, so i reconnected it, and there is heat
I replaced the electric fan with the factory clutch fan setup and then took the car for a drive
after a 30 minute drive getting into boost periodically i parked, and examined for boilovers, and found none! (knock on wood)
so as of this moment my diagnosis seems to be an assortment of things
1) electric fan control unit failing
2) disconnected heater control valve leading to faulty diagnosis of heater core
ill be checking daily as to make sure that all is well, but it seems good for now. Funny how a few things wrong can make it look like a much bigger issue
thanks again!
