blew the stock w58
So i was on the fwy (i drive kinda slow) and this diesel was on my ***, so i floored it then blam! blalalalsdlsajda'dasdlkd;lakl;ksdlfpksdl; (that was the sound) and i pulled over. i put it into first, car died. i put it in neutral, and the car died, like it was stuck in gear. pulled it into my friends shop (where i do my work) called up my friend, had him pick up my w58 from my mkIII supra, swapped the bell housing, had to open the case to change out the selection lever and swapped it back in.
i was going to swap the rear housings too but the output bearing is alittle bigger on the old one.
i didnt swap the speedo gear or the reverse sensor so i have no speedo or reverse lights, but it's just temporary until i get my 58 rebuilt....

no, the sc had a w58, stock. i put another one in because, a. i had one lying around. b. they are cheaper and more abundant than the r154, c. i dont feel like spending alot of money to modify my setup. sure the throw feels like a truck, but when the w58 came in a lot of cars, the r154, not so many. it seems be holding up and the shifter seems a little tighter.

just recently had this happen to me
i know it will vary on condition of each persons but...
mine blew on 13lbs
-stock 1j
-3" dp
-3"exhuast
-intake
-fm
-walboro 255
mine had about 140k miles on it and blew up on me on the way to work one day
i ended up forking over the money and buying an r154
much tighter feel and definatley shifts much easier than my beat up w58

oh boy this is scary. 300 rwkw? thats like 400whp right?
dang big tx thats a lot of miles but still... 13psi on stock twins?? thats really scary
i have the stock w58 trans in my sc300 right now. 110k on it. was running 17psi through a 1j with a 60-1 turbo. didnt break yet. motors out cuz im goin 1.5jz with GE cams.
im praying that it holds up for awhile until i get an R154 and all the stuff to make it work. might have to really be careful...
my roomate has a 95 sc stock W58. gte swap. 67mm persiccion turbo. hes been pushing 17-19 pounds. hasnt broke yet.
he says his friend with an sc was making 650hp through his W58 and it never blew!! he just swaped to an R154 cuz he had one.
so what clutch where u using? u say u drive slow... so u havent been beating on it much??

i was dyno'd at 291 rwhp @ around 4000 ft and 110 degrees
my engine has roughly 100k on it.
i was reading on the supra forums that 5th gear is the weakest
when in neutral, and the clutch in, it's in neutral
when in neutral and the clutch out, it's engaged.
im thinkin to surpass this, go i'm gonna find a r154 put the marlin crawler thrust washer in it to prevent the most common r154 failure. but in the mean time, find out why it failed.

EDIT: Just realized that I was quoting the OP lol. So yea, 5th gear wouldn't even have to be the weakest to fail first. All power shifting aside, if all of the gears were equal strength and you got into the throttle equally in every gear, fifth would fail first because it is at the largest mechanical disadvantage and bears the highest load.
