Trying to find out why my speedometer isn't working. Who is using the SC400 tranny on the 1jz? If so, did the VSS plug right in or did it involve wiring changes? Thanks,
What cluster are you using ? u need an SC3 cluster when you do a JZ swap on the SC400.
I didn't know there was a difference between the 300 and 400 clusters?? How can you tell them apart? I know the cluster is not the original one, but I don't know if it is a 300 or not
I can check for you but yes it will not work you will need a 300 cluster , and if you install a 400 cluster on the 300 the either the tach or speedo will be off.

Apparently it does have the 300 cluster VSS was replaced but didn't fix problem. Not sure where to go from here. I guess I need to start trying to trace some wiring.
This is kind of weird John, are you 100% sure that the cluster was replaced? because that's the only thing i can think of except the wiring....
Yes sir I spoke with the PO and he did the tach resistor bypass and replaced the cluster. He said SNAP did the swap and that the speedometer has never worked. He replaced the VSS and still didn't fix the problem. So I guess it is a wiring issue - hopefully something small as I hate driving without a speedometer. Boost + no speedometer = bad things
Any news?
I am doing a swap right if you want I can check on my wiring and tell you how mine is wired up.
No sir - haven't had a chance to look at it yet.
If you could check the wiring it would be greatly appreciated man. Thank you. It is my biggest peeve with this car and would love to get it working Thank you again,
Jonny
I had a 400 cluster in my 300 once (thought it was a 300 cluster) and quickgs is right the rpm's are way off, but for me the speedo seemed to work just fine, maybe it was like 5-10mph off but it definitely moved. I don't know if thats helpfull at all.
I would guess the wiring could be different on the vss connectors (unlikely though with toyota connectors) or someone cut a wire somewhere (especially if it doesn't move at all). another possibility is the cluster itself, if the contacts for the speedo motor arent sitting properly or maybe the motor is toast. unless you did the work yourself it may be worth opening it up and having a look inside.
Isn't there a mod where people cut one of the wires by the ecu in an attempt to remove the speed limiter? I would start looking for cut wires if the cluster checks out.
I wonder if you could even say eff it all and just run a new wire from the vss to the speedo
