Searched TO DEATH: 1J + Supra/chaser R154 = Which shifter???
Ugh, I'm sorry if this is annoying to you guys. I've been searching the last week trying to nail to down EXACTLY what combination of parts I need to make a JDM Supra/Chaser R154 tranny have it's shifter come up in the proper centered spot in a 1995 SC300's shift boot.
First off, from what pictures I can find, I'm going to have to guess that an R154 transmission is physically LONGER than a W58 from the bellhousing to the spot where the shifter assembly cover (aluminum cover with six bolts) bolts on. Forgive me for stealing photos, but hopefully this helps. Please notice where the circular hole that the shiftlever would stick up out of (and into the car) is in relationship to the shifter cover assembly.
W58 from a 92-94 SC300: Notice that the lever hole is completely BEHIND the 6 mounting holes for the aluminum cover:
Next is a JDM Supra MKIII R154 trans that came on the back of a 1JZ swap. Notice how the the lever hole is completely IN FRONT of the last set of mounting bolts for the aluminum cover:
Lastly, this is a pic from Shern's W58 to R154 conversion thread. Notice how the shifter hole sits about an inch beyond (or center along) the last two mounting bolts for the cover:
I'm confused because in his thread he mentions that those Toyota parts (the aluminum cover and lever) put the shifter in the exact same place as the original W58 on the SC300, but judging from this picture below, it looks like it's actually not far enough back...
Maybe Shern can chime in... does this setup actually place the shifter correctly? From the pic it looks like the shift lever would be pushed up by the radio...
Thanks for the help!

One more thing!
Does anyone know what vehicles that this tranny with the funky shifter assembly came off of?
It's advertised as the factory 5spd behind one of those 1JZ swaps on Ebay.
Does anyone know if the other style shifter parts below will bolt in place of it, or if they are necessary for this specific type of trans?

with the Supra R154 w/ extension mod, yes it does sit slightly more forward, but i think there is also a modded shifter to go with it that puts it slightly further back to get that extra few inches. It had a few extra bends to put it in the stock shifter location
For the second pic, that is a late model R154 with an external shift linkage. This setup is slightly more desirable because there are no shifter mods required to make it fit. Later model Soarers and chasers had this kind of shifter.

Mk3 Supra MA70/JZA70
Early Soarer JZZ30 (and JZX?) .

As you say, the JZX90 and JZX100 mirrored the Soarer.
