Are all W58s created equal?
I have a 1995 SC300 5spd with ~155K miles.
I need to rebuild/replace my tranny which is starting to die and I was wondering if anyone can confirm or deny that the W58 in the 1995 Supra Non-Turbo is EXACTLY the same transmission that's in the 1995 SC300.
The reason I ask is that the W58 through Lexus can be had for ~$2,300 while the Supra trany from Toyota is ~$1,300. That's a big difference for the same transmission (assuming they are the same).
I was hoping to get some independent information before asking Toyota.
Thanks

according to another member on the board (this one or SF...forgot which one), there were 2 versions of the w58. a short and long version. early sc300's had the short and later models had the long. don't know what year the difference came into play but i think around 95/96. all supra's had the long version i believe. anyone else verify this?
but for that kind of $, may as well just upgrade it an r154 if u ever plan on turboing your car.

^agreed, go with the r154, much better tranny and stronger. Shoot, if your even considering the $2300 tranny then get a v161 6 spd out of a TT Supra, I've seen them go for $2000 in prety good shape and low miles.

You should contact Luis at Carson Toyota in SoCal. Very honest and they give much better pricing (like 20% off) than most Lexus / Toyota dealers and has Lexus parts, he'll probably know the answer to your question. Please post up here what you do and what you spent. Good luck..
