Default W58 Year Difference

Can someone please clarify if all the W58 for the SC300 are all the same
from 92-97 ?

I have a 95 and wish to install a 92 model, will I have any problem ?
I found below posted under intellexual.net

Production year revisions in the SC300
The rear shifting assembly on the SC300 was changed in 1995 and is the same as the Supra NA (as far as I know '93-98), but it is unknown if
the '93-94 Supra NA uses the same transmission because the TRD quick shift
kit is designed for '94.1 and later. The transmission change went along
with the changes that were made to the transmission tunnel. The 1995
transmission is longer and taller so you can cut the existing hole where the
shifter goes through but you will have to hammer part of the tunnel to make it
taller. Basically the '92-94 SC300s have the same W58 manual
transmission, but then the '95-97 have an updated version. >

It says the 95+ W58 is longer and taller ?
Has anyone sucessfully install a pre94 into a 95+ without any modification ?

Thanks for your help !

I searched and searched but still can not find the exact answer I am looking for, below is a post about fitting a 95 tranny into a 92, well in my case it is the opposite, so I wonder if it makes any difference.

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...threadid=79012

Do I really have to swap the entire rear assmbly in order to make it work on my 95 SC ?

So basically all W58 transmissions will fit the SC. Of course there are some differences with the shifter area. But regardless they will all fit. The 92-94 came with the internal shifter. The 95+ came with the external shifters which make the W58 a few inches longer.

This is what sets the newer W58s apart from the pre 95+ W58.

Here is something you should also know. If you have a 95 and are planning on installing a 92 there will be some cutting of the tunnel since the older tranny sits further up front. You will see what I mean once the tranny is bolted up and its time to install the shifter. This is no biggie. This is when a dremmel will come in real handy.

Thank you, JspecSC3
Will everything else fit okay ?
So you mean in order to completed the swap, the tunnel needs to be cut,
does it mean there will be some kind of gap left between or can it be covered up with the shifter boot ?

Which swap will be easier, say with a 92 tranny into a 95 car, or a 95+tranny into a pre94 SC ?

Thanks a lot for your quick reply earlier, I've been searching for more detail all day.......

Yeah everything else will fit like butter. The gapping around the shifter hole can easily be covered with the stock rubber boots to prevent heat and fuse from coming in.

Which swap will be easier, say with a 92 tranny into a 95 car, or a 95+tranny into a pre94 SC ?
Same thing just vise versa. Instead of cutting forward you will be cutting backwards. I know sometimes when ever someone mentions the word "cutting" they might get a little spooked. But its pretty easy to do and you'll know just how much to cut once the tranny is bolted up and ready to go. Good luck!

since it wasnt clearly said and doesnt bite you in the ***. You HAVE to use a pre 95 shifter if you use the 92 tranny. thats what was meant when he said the differant mounting up there. wich arnt that easy to find if it doesnt come with it. make sure its not a supra r154 shifter either. It doesnt swan neck and wont clear the hole.

Thank you for the clarification !
I was not aware of the matching shifter requirment.
Can it be purchased separately from the dealer ?
I wonder how much they may be asking for.

So I gather the 92-94 has the swang neck looking type of shifter, where
the 95+ is the one shown by JSpecSC3

Thanks again, any information is much appreciated !!

the 92-94 is completely differant it doesnt use that whole bracket assembly above that u see in the pic. it doesnt use a bolt on the bottom like that it just has a ball. Yes tho instead of being straight its like you said in swan necks in the middlish area

As you can see I am desperately looking for answers right now during a Friday night........

I have a 95 SC, and have this good oppurtunity to accquire a good working 92 tranny, can anyone give me any suggestion if its worth it to go with it and go thru the addtional changes required ?

Thanks a million !

Yes they can. Im looking to convert my other SC from auto to manual as well. The only thing holding me back is the shifter. Its pretty hard to source one so Im thinking about comparing the price of a new one from the dealer to the price of an aftermarket short shifter.

or........can I still use my current 95 shifter assembly while replacing just the main part of the 92 tranny ? This way I can avoid cutting the tunnel while still keeping my existing shifter and everything. Suppose the shifter assembly can be taken apart but I wonder if they are compatiable with each other ?

Thanks again !
