How to change distributor cap & rotor on a 92 SC400?
Hi everyone:
Recently I noticed a slightly increasing vibration of my steering wheel when idling. When I open the hood, I heard a low but annoying noise directly from the passenger side distributor housing, almost sounds as if something loose is turning in there. Could it be the distributor rotor coming loose or something broke in there? The driver side has no noise at all.
I decide to change the distributor cap and rotor as I think it's about time to do it anyway. I could not find a good write-up for DIY. Can anyone share their experience or point me to the right direction?
Thanks in advance.
Frank

Welcome to Club Lexus.
two minor items:
For engine & transmission items, please post in the corresponding subsection.
And please use the search engine (up at the top there )
I spent 45 seconds searching on Distributor cap & rotor.

There are 3 screws mounting the cap to the distributor. First you get the new cap place it next to the old one while it is still attached and pull one wire from the old distributor and continue until all wires are attached to the new one. Keeping the new one in the same position as the old one, now you can remove the screws and cap to replace with the new one.
P.S. Just make sure you keep the same firing order as the old cap.

Thanks for your advice.
I have seen that DIY on SC300 too after I searched but I have a 1uz which is different. My problem is how to take the distributor cover off so that I could fully remove the cap and rotor. I can remove the top half off but not sure how to get the bottom off to fully expose the cap. Anyone who has done it or seen it done on a SC400? Pictures would greatly help too.
Thanks.

If you know how to identify the distributor, the easiest way to learn is to take it apart. Look for all bolts attaching it to the car and remove them. Everything Is pretty much in your face. You can see the bolts clearly and it's a fairly easy thing to do.

This site will be a wealth of knowledge regarding the 1uzfe. As fas as changing the caps & rotors, it is quite easy. It can seem daunting since there is a bit of plastic to take off - but once you get both timing belt covers and the passenger side ignitor odd, then it's very straight forward. You will need a 10mm socket, an extension and a phillips head screwdriver. The rotors only go on 2 ways - correctly or wrong. That sounds sarcastic, but isn't. They only mount 1 way or 180 degrees from that eay, so make sure you pay attention to which direction they are facing. The caps have 3 screws - 2 super easy to remove, the 3rd not so much(but I also didn't remove the lower tb cover completely). Definitely pay attention to your wire placement. Your stock wires will be numbered, but the replacements will not. Either go 1 by 1 or mark the new ones.
If you're feeling particularly brave, theres also a tutorial floating around for the replacement of the distributor orings.
Best of luck.
