1997 Sc300 5-speed clutch noise
Hey guys,
Ok, i just got this car, and it has a brand new clutch. However, there is noise when the clutch is not depressed. like a winding noise (when i'm in neutral it is the most noticable). I am wondering if it is the drive shaft, or the throwout bearing, and how much it will cost to fix. Also, is this something that must be fixed immediately? As the car seems to run flawlessly aside from the noise... The car only has 53,000 miles, apparently the previous owner didn't know how to drive stick. That's why I had the dealership put in a new clutch (as the old one was slipping a bit in higher gears)... Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!! -=nathan
Oh and also... I sometimes get a loud thump or poping sound if i'm backing up with the wheel completely in one direction or the other. It seems to be coming from the front of the car. Could this be a bad CV Joint? Thanks in advance...

The noise you are hearing is the input shaft. It whines when the clutch is engaged and if you depress the clutch slowly, you can hear it actually wind down until it stops. When it does, slowly raise the pedal and you will hear it wind back up. This noise is common on the W58's. Annoying, but common. It doesn't mean anything is wrong with the tranny tho anything is possible.
Make sure you're topped up on your tranny fluid.
The noise coming from the front of your car is your bushings that are worn. There's no CV joints up there.
Good luck!

THANKS!!! I feel better knowing that. You're absolutely right about the winding sound... If I slowly depress the clutch it will slow down until it stops, and vice versa. As far as the bushings are concerned, do you know how much they will cost to fix? THanks!!! -=nathan

The labor for bushings highly varies on where you take your car. You can replace with this stock units at the dealer, or go with aftermarket bushings like Daizen. I have the Daizens and they are great. They are more of an upgrade tho.

clutch, suspension noises
It would be rare for the throw-out bearing to make noise when the clutch is NOT depressed. It doesn't really come into play except when the clutch is depressed.
As far as the popping noise you hear from the front.... the CV joints are, of course, in the rear drive train, so rule that out. Possible for some front steering or suspension joints to be loose, but the Lexus suspension is incredibly sturdy and long-lived.
