Popping or clanking sound from rear Wheel
Hello, I have a 91-LS400 ~345K miles. I now hear a popping or clunking sound from the driver side rear wheel. It doesn't seem to be the brakes, they look good, and do not start the sounds. The sound is heard when driving less than 4o mph, constant popping, and seems to fade out when driving faster. It sounds like a CV joint if this was a front wheel drive car, any ideas? I have read the thread on the brake caliper not being torqued down correctly, but that popping starts when the brakes are depressed, mine do it from a start usually. It seems associated with engine torque transferred to the rear.
Just found that is does not do it when coasting or when given very mild acceleration. But if I romp on it "Clang, clang, clang".

The sound seems to be not caused by turning, but when I give it gas to get it going, straight or when turning, and does not start or stop when the brakes are pressed, just speed stops the popping. No noise when I hit bumps, over 40 mph.

Yes factory suspension, and I am sure the shocks need replacing, but the popping sound is tied to the wheel, every revolution gives one pop, slow movement slop pop, faster movement faster pop, until ~40 mph.

Turned out to be the Driver side axle. Lexus wanted $700 for driver side and $800 for passenger side. I got an entire rear end (left and right axle and differential for $200 form a junk yard. Replaced the rear end andnow no problems, very quiet.
