Hi there, it sounds like the problem i had when the capacitors on the instrument cluster failed,it caused all sorts of electrical gremlins in the cabin, so do a search for DASH LIGHTS out and it will explain all.

thanks i'll start there. Who is the best deal for cluster reman? Can you even say? My cluster needle tips are out and fuel gauge needle reads out of gas, a very limp position and almost dead.

Easy fix you can do yourself mate , if you can hold a solder iron you can fix it.
Needles are a slightly more complex problem though!!

Really? I have had a little experience with my bmw cluster but i figured that with this car there would be more than one capacitor and i would have to find it. How many are there and is there any instructions to fix this anywhere? thanks for the good news

All of the lights (needles and cluster lights) work perfectly on my 1991 LS400, but I noticed that just this year, if its below 40° (which is has not been for about 10 days) that the left side of my cluster will be much dimmer than the driver side for about 10 seconds. It did not do it last year, so I was wondering if this was a sign that my cluster would soon be failing. Maybe not if yours does it even after new caps.

I agree - the LSs defects do not like cold weather. My car has a power steering leak when it drops below 35°. I think its leaking internally and externally. In the summer, it does not leak a drop and I never have to add fluid, but in the winter I do. This past 10 days, its not dropped below 50° here and the fluid is still full, but three weeks ago, it was unseasonably cold with highs in the 30s and I had to add fluid every 2 days.
